Archaeology of Wenceslas Square in Prague

Petr Starec: Archaeology of Wenceslas Square in Prague This PhD thesis is a part of archaeology of public space in medieval and early modern cities. Based on the findings of long-term archaeological research of Wenceslas Square it presents an analysis of the results of research in the square and interprets the image of Wenceslas Square in its transformation from the Middle Ages to modern times. At the same time, it presents information about the geomorphology of the selected area, water conditions, older settlement forms and the communication needs of this public space. The knowledge gained also provides a probe into the everyday life of the town's inhabitants. Systematic archaeological research on Wenceslas Square is mostly associated with the construction of the subway in the central part of the square in 1967-1968. Later another great construction intervention in Wenceslas Square occurred at its lower end with the construction of the subway and Můstek metro line A station. Construction circumstances allowed archaeologists to obtain only partial information regarding issue of the Old Town medieval fortifications. Práce přinese prezentaci, celkové zhodnocení a srovnání archeologických informací získaných exkavací studny a jímky zachycených na Václavském náměstí čp. 837/II a rozbor nálezové zprávy vypracované PhDr. Václavem Humlem, CSc. Vytvořením metodického systému na případu jímky a studny tak práce připraví materiální rámec zpracování zbylých objektů daného výzkumu. Systematickým zpracováním nálezové zprávy Václava Humla zas vytvoří teoretický rámec pro zasazení tohoto výzkumu do širšího kontextu. Lokální problematiku zpracování dat z jímek a studen zasadí do souvislostí pražské archeologie. V neposlední řadě poukáže na výhody spolupráce archeologů a botaniků rozborem pylové analýzy RNDr. Vlasty Jankovské CSc.

This work presents and summarizes results of comparison of well and cesspit excavated by research of house čp. 837/II. Methodical framework will be created for elaboration of other objects on the plot. Site report written by PhDr. Václav Huml, CSc. will be undergo review thanks to systematic elaboration of data of different origin. Corelation of his documentation and report will allow comparation with results of others researches. Review of the site report will be background for creation of theoretical framework of waste strategies problematics. With this review will be work set in broad context of knowledge of this problematics and local Prague problematics of elaborating data from objects form by waste strategies processes (primarily wells and cesspits).
