This bachelor thesis focuses on the media image of the May Day celebrations in four decades of the communist era in Czechoslovakia. Using qualitative analysis this thesis describes the media image two weeks before and one week after the celebrations in the last two years of each decade - i. e. 1948, 1949, 1958, 1959, 1968, 1969, 1978, 1979, 1988 and 1989. In particular, it focuses on three Czechoslovakian daily newspapers - Rudé právo, Svobodné slovo and Lidová demokracie - in these selected periods. The qualitative analysis is accompanied by a quantitative part which counts the total number of mentions regarding the May Day celebrations in all three newspapers in the selected years. Furthermore, the analysis focuses on how the newspapers used photographs and graphics regarding the May Day celebrations and how they informed about celebrations abroad. The objective of this thesis is to describe the transformation of the media image of the May Day celebrations in the course of historic events in Czechoslovakia and to ascertain how the particular newspapers differed in their covering of the celebrations.
