Study of contamination of river sediments with platinum metals
Novotný, Matěj ; Řezáčová, Veronika (referee) ; Komendová, Renata (advisor)
This work deals with the characteristics of platinum metals and problems related to their toxicity and mobility in the environment, especially in the aquatic environment. These metals are released into the environment due to the use of automotive catalysts. Their function is based on the catalytic properties of platinum metals. Because of the high temperatures, these metals can be oxidized in the catalyst and subsequently emitted together with the combustion products into the surrounding atmosphere. The aim of the thesis is to measure real samples of river sediments of the river Svratka on the territory of the city of Brno and to find the possibility of contamination of the aquatic environment with these metals.
Design and production of a CNC engraving machine using an LED laser module
Novotný, Matěj ; Zemčík, Oskar (referee) ; Dvořáková, Jana (advisor)
This work focuses on the evaluation of the current state of the art and comparison of the properties of beam unconventional technologies. It discusses laser devices and the engraving process. It then focuses on the design and fabrication of a CNC engraving machine assembly using LED laser module. It describes the components used individually, their function, features, equipment to design and then the complete physical assembly of the device. Functionality was tested based on several engraving and cutting tests. Finally, the economic part of the project was discussed.
Is it possible to increase the efficiency of separate waste collection to achieve the necessary reduction in calorific value and increase the biological stability of mixed municipal waste?
Novotný, Matěj ; Innemanová, Petra (advisor) ; Matějíček, Luboš (referee)
The bachelor's thesis deals with the topic of processing mixed municipal waste in the Czech Republic and the possibilities of diverting biodegradable waste in such a way as to increase the biological stability of the waste deposited in municipal waste landfills and to fulfill the goals of limiting the landfilling of municipal waste as stipulated by the new waste law. At the same time, it deals with the approaches of neighboring countries, which also address the need to reduce the volume of landfilled municipal waste by 2030 in accordance with the requirements of the European Union. In the practical part, five samples of mixed municipal waste are subsequently analyzed and the possibilities of diverting individual components are discussed here. Key words: waste, biodegradable waste, landfilling, waste composition
Composition operators on function spaces
Novotný, Matěj ; Spurný, Jiří (advisor) ; Kalenda, Ondřej (referee)
Univerzita Karlova Abstract of the bachelor thesis Composition operators on function spaces Matěj Novotný, Praha 2011 In the thesis we define what is an composition operator on the space of continuous or measurable functions of one complex variable so that we may proceed to study its properties depending on properties of the mapping the operator is induced by. We search for conditions under which the operator is continuous, compact and an isomorphism. We roughly estimate the spectrum of an operator defined on a space of continuous functions. 1
Estimating the Relationship between Food, Fuel and Biofuel Prices
Novotný, Matěj ; Janda, Karel (advisor) ; Khymych, Olha (referee)
Although biofuels have drawn the attention of researchers since its boom, which took place 20 years ago, doubts about benefits which their usage brings in the academic debate. This thesis joins the debate that discusses the impact of biofuels on food prices. The prices of 38 commodities and assets that are related to the biofuels are examined under Minimum Spanning Tree and Hierarchical Tree methods over the years between 2003-2019. The time span is divided into 4 periods, that responds to the development of world food prices. The results show that the relationship between biofuels and their feedstock depends on the overall level of food prices. In the case of higher food prices, the link between feedstock and biofuel is stronger and therefore the price transmission is more likely to happen. With lower food prices, this link is significantly weaker. Furthermore, the development of world food prices does not follow the trend of increasing biofuels production as food prices have become stable in recent periods. Therefore, this thesis does not support the claim that biofuels cause higher prices of food. Keywords biofuels, ethanol, biodiesel, transportation, food price transmission, Minimum Spanning Tree, Hierarchical Tree 1
The Andokides' speech On the mysteries. Translation, commentary and introductory study
Novotný, Matěj ; Souček, Jan (advisor) ; Marek, Václav (referee)
In the end of the 5th century B.C., the Andokides' speech On the mysteries represents an interesting source of information. It focuses on the processes with impious criminals who mutilated herms and profaned Eleusinian mysteries in 415 B.C., and the revision of Athenian laws in 403 B.C. This thesis attempts to present this speech in historical context, to evaluate critically its credibility, and to point out general problems concerning the use of the corpus of the Attic orators as a source of information regarding political and legal history. Thus the centre of the thesis lies in the commentary attached to a completely new Czech translation of Andokides' speech.

The Impiety in Classical Athens
Novotný, Matěj ; Souček, Jan (advisor) ; Bednaříková, Jarmila (referee) ; Kysučan, Lubor (referee)
Matěj Novotný - Impiety in Classical Athens Abstract The thesis discusses the definition and prosecution of impiety in democratic Athens during the Classical period, i.e. in 5th-4th centuries BCE. The question of "impiety" in the narrower sense, i.e. of what was denoted by the Greek word ἀσέβεια (literally, "the absence/negation of respect"), is set into larger context of other crimes of religious character, covered by special laws: "sacrilege" (ἱεροσυλία), digging out sacred olive-trees, offences against festivals and other delicts which were not subsumed under any more general term in the laws, pragmatically formulated as they were. The dissertation builds on the work of the researchers who show considerable scepticism towards the reliability of later sources, for example Plutarch or Diogenes Laertius - this is connected with doubts concerning processes against philosophers before Socrates. At the same time, the thesis follows the scholars who doubt the authenticity of the documents inserted in the speeches of the Attic Orators. For these reasons, a considerable part of the thesis is devoted to the rebuttal of late reports and inserted documents. A particular attention is given to the Decree of Diopeithes, which is mentioned in Plutarch's Life of Pericles and is usually interpreted as criminalising...
