Control of territory as a factor for the effective implementation of a political objective of an Islamist violent non-state actor
Ludvík, Zdeněk ; Hynek, Nikola (advisor) ; Bureš, Oldřich (referee) ; Eichler, Jan (referee)
This thesis wants to make clear the theoretical concept in the form of a testable hypothesis on the relationship between the political control of the territory by a Violent Non-State Actor (VNSA) and the effectiveness of realization of its political objective (policies). Since in the literature there is no explicit theory or theorization that would reflect the varying degree of effectiveness with regard to the varying degree of territorial penetration, and there are no explicit parametric indicators and values that may be necessary for effective achievement of the political objective in relation to the territory, the purpose of the research will be to answer the question whether, how and to what extent the intensity of the physical penetration of the territory is related to the ability to more easily and efficiently achieve the goals for which the VNSA has been established and has strived. A general definition of threshold values of the penetration can also provide partial piece of knowledge for practical policies and approaches to territorial VNSA on the part of states (counterinsurgency actors). Although there is no explicit use of any of the theories of international relations in the research, the used theoretical framework is inspired by a) approaches to political geography and outlines of...

Reconstructing Nuclear Deviance: Stigma Politics and the Rules of Nonproliferation Game
Smetana, Michal ; Hynek, Nikola (advisor) ; Eichler, Jan (referee) ; Grzelczyk, Virginie (referee)
In this dissertation, my aim is to unpack the relationship between deviant behavior and normative change in global nuclear politics. I draw on the interactionist approach in sociology to conceptualize "stigma politics" as an interactive, dynamic process of the social construction of deviance in international affairs. I connect these insights with contemporary IR theories on norm contestation to theorize the way how (re)constructions of deviance contest and affirm boundaries of appropriate behavior in social orders. I employ this theoretical perspective to study the (re)constructions of "nuclear deviance" in global nuclear order, and the dynamics of norms and rules in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty regime.

Růžičková, Kristýna ; Eichler, Jan (advisor) ; Dubský, Zbyněk (referee)
The Kurds are considered to be the largest nation without their own state. In Turkey, the Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK), considered to be a terrorist organization, has been struggling for Kurdish self-determination for over 30 years. However, the PKK changed its demands and mainly its tactics - it has begun to attempt a political solution to the Kurdish issue. With the onset of a global threat in the form of the so-called Islamic State (ISIL), the PKK began to engage in the fight against it. Its role in this struggle is the main theme of the thesis. The aim of this work is to analyze the role of the PKK in the fight against ISIL on the basis of the characteristics of terrorism, the development of the Kurdish question in Turkey, and the threat posed by ISIL. The thesis concludes that the PKK has a very significant role in this fight, not only because of its experience in fighting the Turkish government. Thanks to its contribution, the PKK also aspires to be removed from the US and European list of terrorist organizations.

The whole Cold War discourse addresses many controversial question and who ended the Cold War is one of these questions. By employing the methodology of analysis, this thesis aims to assess the impact of Ronald Reagan and his foreign policy on the End of the Cold War. This thesis tests the hypothesis that Ronald Reagan and his foreign policy were the most decisive factor in the End of the Cold War.
