Soft power in practice - a study of British public diplomacy between 1997 and 2007
Davidová, Kateřina ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Tomalová, Eliška (referee)
This bachelor thesis examines the issue of public diplomacy as a means through which the state can exercise its soft power. It draws from the particular example of public diplomacy developments in the United Kingdom between 1997 and 2007, i.e. during the premiership of Tony Blair. At first, a theoretical debate concerning the concept of public diplomacy is introduced, including its advantages and pitfalls. Afterwards, the working system of public diplomacy within the UK is characterised, as well as the main changes that have occurred in its organisational structure during the studied period. Furthermore, the two key British institutions of public diplomacy are presented; BBC World Service and British Council. Finally, the thesis analyses some of the actual public diplomacy campaigns and strategies that Britain put in place between 1997 and 2007. The main emphasis is placed on the comparison of the strategies before and after 2001, when major changes happened, and the analysis of the causes of these changes. The thesis concludes that causes that influenced the formation of British public diplomacy were of internal and external character, while it was the external impulses that triggered the most radical changes.

Framing Climate Policies: Discourse Analysis of Carbon Pricing Debates in Canada and Australia Abstract The aim of this paper is to analyze and compare the discourses of Stephen Harper and Tony Abbot during federal election campaigns where climate policies played an unusually important role (2008 in Canada and 2013 in Australia). The study builds on a hypothesis, that according to the post-materialist theory and the Environmental Kuznets Curve, such economically advanced, democratic countries as Canada and Australia should be at the vanguard of climate action. However, in reality they are some of the worst performers when it comes to tackling carbon emissions. Both Harper and Abbott publicly promised to put in serious efforts to tackle climate change. However, when the question of setting a national price on carbon came up for discussion during the above-mentioned election campaigns, they both not only opposed it, but even tried to discredit it by framing the whole debate in overwhelmingly negative terms. In order to uncover what kind of frames and other discursive strategies the two politicians used to shape the debate, critical discourse analysis was applied to their public statements on the policy of carbon tax. Results of this analysis show that they used all of the frames that are typically associated...

Contribution of selected civic associations in the area of family care

In this final thesis I focused on the civic associations YMCA - Reunion (YMCA - Setkání) and The Centre for Family and Social Care Ostrava (Centrum pro rodinu a sociální péči Ostrava). I described in how they contribute to family care. The range of their service starts with consultations for couples before they get married. The service continues with care for young marriages and activities for married couples, who want to work for improvement in their relationship. The list of the offered services of the association is much broader - they care for the elderly, for families with challenged children and in other cases, when there is a need for family support.
