Twin-fluid nozzles for CO2 capture
Smutková, Karolína ; Lízal, František (oponent) ; Jedelský, Jan (vedoucí práce)
In the age of global climate change, attention is now turning to human induced CO2 production. Among other things, combustion power plants and cement production are significant producers of CO2. Spray columns are one way to prevent CO2 from these sources from escaping into the atmosphere. These devices use atomizers to transform a liquid absorbent into a spray, which gives it a large contact area. Gaseous products containing CO2 flow in the opposite direction to the absorbent spray. The CO2 is bound to the absorbent and together they flow away from the spray column to the next process step. The problem with this part of the technology is that too small droplets leave with the cleaned gas into the atmosphere, which is a big problem since the absorbent is very often ammonia-based. Droplets that are too large, due to their weight and momentum, fall quickly and participate minimally in the reaction. Another problem is the absorbent that sticks to the walls and therefore hardly takes part in the absorption. In this work, sprays of different droplet size spectra are purposely produced in experimental measurements. These sprays are measured in detail at different upstream velocities by the PDA system, in combination with BSAFlow and Labview software. The data are then analyzed using Matlab, Python and Excel. Different droplet size groups are examined to determine what size droplets are entrained and what trajectory they take. It is found that even at low upstream velocities, all droplets up to 20 µm in size are entrained. As the upstream current increases, droplets in the range of 20 - 60 µm are also carried away. Droplet entrainment above 100 µm occurs only from 10 m/s. Another interesting trend is that some of the droplets are blown away as soon as they leave the atomizer. This work gives an answer to the appropriate droplet size spectrum and suitable counterflow velocities in the spray column so that absorber entrainment is minimized.
