Tell Me How Long the Train's Been Gone by James Baldwin: translation and stylistic analysis of three representative fragments

This bachelor thesis is focused on the problems which may occur, while translating from English into Czech, using the novel Tell Me How Long the Train's Been Gone by the American author James Baldwin. The practical part contains chosen extracts from The House Nigger. The theoretical part aims at the analysis of my translation. Special attention is paid to the problematic sections, which have been encountered while translating. Final decisions are provided with my comments often with regard to the helpful quotes from the books dealing with translation theories, especially by Jiří Levý and Dagmara Knittlová. Porovnání dvou překladů knihy Tortilla Flat Johna Steinbecka

Tato diplomová práce porovnává dva české překlady novely amerického autora Johna Steinbecka Tortilla flat na základě poznatků uznávaných teoretiků překladu (Levý, Knittlová, Krijtová). Pro Steinbeckovo dílo je charakteristická diferenciace přímé řeči za použití hovorové a slangové vrstvy jazyka od řeči vyprávění, a překladatelé tak byli postaveni před nelehký úkol funkčním způsobem převést tyto odlišné jazykové vrstvy. Práce se soustředí mimo jiné i na to, jakými prostředky bylo této diferenciace dosaženo. Výrazným prvkem Steinbeckovy Pláně Tortilly je také snaha o nastínění místního koloritu využitím reálií a nepřekládaných výrazů ze španělského jazyka, při jejichž převodu je potřeba zohlednit jak požadavek na zachování tohoto koloritu, tak na vytvoření překladu, který je literárně plnohodnotným a srozumitelným textem v cílovém jazyce.
