Accessibility and universal design of residential buildings
Bacová, Andrea
The architectural solution of residential buildings should meet functional and aesthetic requirements so that the buildings do not disturb the surrounding environment and serve their users in full. We defined these criteria in the updated standard STN 734301 Residential buildings, which applies in Slovakia from February 2021. We consider service to users to be one of the essential tasks and missions of architecture, and it includes service for all social groups, regardless of age, gender, health status, simply said service for all. Related to this is the requirement for universal design, which is a set of rules and regulations for the design of buildings and the physical environment that enable conflict-free use for all people. The paper deals with the current situation in the field of accessibility and universal design of residential buildings and living environments in the context of solving the problem of the aging population in Slovakia, but also the fulfillment of Article 9 Accessibility of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It presents findings from the currently national project Support for Universal Design, which is implemented at the Faculty of Architecture and Design, STU in Bratislava.
