The detection of cognitive dysfunction in multiple sclerosis
Blahová-Dušánková, Jana ; Kubala Havrdová, Eva (advisor) ; Papežová, Hana (referee) ; Rektorová, Irena (referee)
Evaluation of cognitive impairment is often omitted in multiple sclerosis (MS), as the available instruments usually require considerable time and resources, and are not readily available in all countries. The aims of this study were to examine validity of the Czech translation of the MACFIMS (Minimal Assessment of Cognitive Function in MS), to validate the BICAMS (Brief International Cognitive Assessment for MS) and to compare outcomes of the MACFIMS and the BICAMS. We evaluated 367 MS patients and 134 healthy controls with the MACFIMS battery, which also comprises the 3 tests of the BICAMS (Symbol Digit Modalities Test, Brief Visuospatial Memory Test- Revised, California Verbal Learning Test, second edition). The most accurate BICAMS criterion of cognitive deficit was that of at least 1 of the overall 3 tests outside the normal range (sensitivity = 94%, specificity = 86%, p=10-28). Outcomes of the Czech translation of the MACFIMS were comparable to its original. The MACFIMS and the BICAMS identified cognitive deficit in 55% and 58% of the MS patients, respectively. Both the BICAMS and MACFIMS predicted patient vocational status. The BICAMS is highly sensitive and specific to cognitive impairment in MS as defined by the MACFIMS. This impairment is significantly associated with vocational status. Our work...
The Impact of Structural Funds and Cohesion Fund on Convergence: The Case of Slovak Districts
Kotrč, Michal ; Šťastná, Lenka (advisor) ; Cahlík, Tomáš (referee)
Do Structural Funds and Cohesion Fund contribute to the improvement of economic performance across Slovak districts? In order to answer the question this thesis explores the impact of EU funds invested within specific operational programmes over the programming periods 2007-2013 and 2014-2020 on the decrease in unemployment rate and on the increase in real wage and employment rate. Besides the standard panel data regression technique we also apply a spatial autoregressive model due to the presence of spillover effects between regions. This thesis thus goes beyond the existing literature on the evaluation of the impact of EU funds in Slovakia as it incorporates spatial effects in the analysis. In comparison with the results of the baseline fixed effects model, the estimated impact of EU funds in the spatial autoregressive model is smaller and in certain cases even negative. Hence the results raise doubts about the efficiency of EU funds. Furthermore, after including the spatial effects we find that the existence and significance of the economic convergence across Slovakia depends not only on the chosen economic indicator but also on the specification of regional units.

Migrácia ako náhrada nedostatkových pracovníkov
Pompa, Tomáš
The bachelor thesis deals with migration as a substitute for shortage workers. I also deal with the possibility for skilled migrants and their integration into the labor market in terms of short and long term impacts. The first part deals with the objective and subjective barriers to employment for workers from the EU and from countries which are not EU members. I highlight the current valid regulation of the Act on Residence of foreigners in the Czech Republic. The practical part focuses on the analysis of job vacancies and employment of foreigners. At the end are recommendations for resolving the shortage of labor in oversized public sectors.

Aulehlová, Lucie
Aulehlová, L. The analysis of tourism in Israel. Bachelor thesis. Brno: Mendel University, 2017. In this bachelor thesis I focus on investigating tourism data from Israel. I deal with the causality between the political and safety situation in Israel and tourism. The research question is whether terrorism influences tourism in the negative way and if yes, how much. In the first part of my thesis I deal with the determination of the studied period and the general terms which are related to the events that are crucial for understanding the situation. I also deal with the meaning of tourism for this area, the most visited places in Israel and crisis management in tourism. In the analytical part I investigate the causality by five main indicators. The data is from a period of 21 years, particularly the years 1995-2015.

The impact of Urbanization on the socioeconomic development of Ghana
Aikins, Michael Boako
At independence Ghana had about 70% of it populace leaving in the rural areas but now the country is over 50% urbanized. People are changing from agricultural occupation to business, trade, services and other professions in search for a quality life style. Major cities in Ghana such as Accra, Kumasi and now the oil city Takoradi are now facing urban management challenges since the cities are becoming more and more dirty and unkempt. Drawing on data from the Living Standard Survey Reports for Round 5-6 that spans from 2008 to 2014 for Ghana, this study examines the effects of urbanization on socio-economic development in Ghana. The study demonstrates some association of urbanization with developmental outcomes in education, health, employment and housing. It examines urbanization by using patterns of internal migration, noting that people move from relatively poor areas to richer ones in Ghana. While it is difficult to establish causality, the evidence suggests that while urbanization happens mostly by internal migration, such moves may allow poor people to access better opportunities in richer regions in Ghana. This study then looks more carefully at the association between internal migration and some socio-economic indicators of education, health, employment and housing at the state level and to some degree at the household level. A key finding of this research is the association of urbanization of educational attainment for female and a positive life expectancy in general. In addition, urbanization has not had entirely positive relationship on employment and housing in the big cities in Ghana.
