Empirical Essays in Institutional Microeconomics
Schwarz, Jiří ; Bauer, Michal (advisor) ; Benáček, Vladimír (referee) ; Bjørnskov, Christian (referee) ; Berggren, Niclas (referee)
The dissertation consists of three empirical papers in institutional microeconomics. The first paper examines the role of institutional quality in international trade, the second paper focuses on unintended consequences of intellectual property rights for social welfare, and the last one addresses the impact of banking on corporate financing and investment. An introductory chapter puts these three papers into perspective. In the first paper I analyze the role of institutions in price dispersion among cities in the European region in the 1996-2009 period. Using a number of institutional quality measures I find that the better the institutions, the lower the predicted dispersion. The result is robust to different specifications of the regression model and is consistent with a hypothesis that arbitrage, as an entrepreneurial activity and the main power behind the law of one price, is influenced by institutional quality. In the second paper I use a large data set of U.S. patents applied for between 1980 and 2007 by 22 large technology companies to study development of strategic patenting over time and across industries. Using two complementary methods I reveal strong evidence against the hypothesis of more strategic patenting after 1995. Contrary to the expectations, aerospace patents appear to be on average...
An Economic Analysis of the Cross-Border Insolvency Proceedings within the context of the Changes of the Council Regulation (EC) No 1346/2000
Juhás, Juraj ; Richter, Tomáš (advisor) ; Břízová, Pavla (referee)
The content of this bachelor thesis is an economic analysis of the cross-border insolvency proceeding held according to the Council regulation (EC) No 1346/2000 on insolvency proceeding and proposals of its amendment. It is focused mainly on changes regarding the possibility to request an opening secondary proceeding and changes regarding the insolvency of groups of companies. A basic framework for evaluation of a profitability of a secondary proceeding opening for a concrete creditor was introduced at the end of the chapter II. It involves three main factors: ratio of relative shares on the realization of debtor assets in the case a secondary proceeding was opened and in the case I was not opened; additional incomes caused by the fact that the debtor assets were administered as a whole (the assets were not liquidated by parts in several parallel insolvency proceedings) and transaction costs. The proposed changes of the cross-border insolvency law in the European Union concerning a limitation of the right to request the opening of a secondary proceeding and obligatory cooperation between proceedings regarding a member of the same group of companies are then evaluated with respect to this basic framework.

Kosturák, Matej ; Koubek, Ivo (advisor) ; Kocourek, David (referee)
In my work I focus on the essential components of the bankruptcy and insolvency problem. The basis for understanding of mentioned problem was study of capital structure and it's connection with world of insolvency. Secondly I focus on different aspects of qualitative analysis of bankruptcy, starting with definition of different terms, many times unprofessionally misused, followed by description of four main processes of bankruptcy. These processes connect fundamental causes of bankruptcy with financial and nonfinancial consequences. For an economic paper, it is quiet extensively concerned with insolvency law, concretely with new Czech norm, which is in force since 2008. From legal definition of default, through initiation of insolvency proceeding to the individual options of solution, the reader can clearly understand the core of this paper. As particular contribution I regard part of the paper, where I examine 160 cases of Czech companies and persons under liquidation process. Among the most significant conclusion I consider finding of quite significant differences in the court proceedings of Czech courts, the length of the insolvency proceedings and each of its phases and the ratio of satisfied claims of secured as well as unsecured creditors.

Dráb, Martin ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Zubíček, Milan (referee)
Bachelor thesis Intervention of the International Monetary Fund in Argentina deals with the economic breakdown in 2001 and the role of International Monetary Fund in this event. Political background and economic policy has been analysed for better understanding what exactly eventually led Argentina to bankruptcy. For pragmatic reasons, most attention is devoted to 1990's that are most valuable for confirming the efficiency and motivation of the participation of the International Monetary Fund. Primary evaluation criteria in the thesis are inflation (based on consumer price index), growth of GDP, balance of payments and unemployment. All of the economic indicators are described on the historical background, as well as the political situation during the discussed period of time. Simultaneously, an effort to describe behaviour and development of the International Monetary Fund is manifested in regards to its own motivation, which is consolidation of the government budget and establishing economic development. Last but not least, there is a note about a controversy, which surrounds the whole existence of institution like International Monetary Fund, his agency and role.
