The application of elastic-plastic models in estimating damage zones caused by blasting of deep tunnels

The paper deals with the continuous modelling of damage zones caused by excavation of tunnels and boreholes in connection with deep repository of spent nuclear fuel in crystalline rocks. For simplicity, elastic and elastic-plastic modelling approaches based on Mohr-Coulomb or Hoek-Brown failure criteria are presented and compared. For the implementation, proper codes were created in Matlab and Python with innovative elements.
Simulation of nonlinear response of construction materials and problem of identitifaction of material parameters

The issue of parameter idenetification within numerical simulations can be considered a necessary step in the use of mathematical models, such as complex material models of building materials utilized in finite element method. The problem is particularly epmhasized in the case of anisothropic materials but also in the case of concrete, which behaves differently in tension and compression and which shows different response under rapid-dynamic and long-term loading. Correct capture of the concrete response in the computation requires usage of plasticity theory, damage theory, visco-elasticity and visco-plasticity or their mutual combinations. It results in development of material models and rheological schemes with large amount of parameters that are not commonly available in standards. The disseration presents application of meta-heuristic algorithm Particle Swarm for parameter identification. The success of the method is demonstrated in a pair of cases, first on the identification of elastoplastic material model parameters from stress strain diagram and then to identify the values of stiffness constants and viscosities of the rheological scheme from a creep curve.
Use of advanced kinematic hardening rules for prediction of multiaxial ratcheting

The cumulation of plastic deformation due to cyclic loading, so called ratcheting, is considered as critical process for purpose of simulation. For this reason, many of advanced models of plasticity have been developed to capture the evolution of material during the load reversals. Historically, these models are based on concept of multicomponent back-stress, that provides the prediction of phenomenon of kinematic hardening (KH) [Chaboche 1979]. The key for accurate prediction is, besides well designed model, identification of model parameters. To present results on prediction of multiaxial ratcheting by FEA, the multicomponent Armstrong-Frederick with a threshold with r Modification was implemented via the UMAT interface of Abaqus Standart. Model parameters were identified on experimental data presented in [Hassan, Kyriakides 1992] and [Hassan et. al. 1992]. To prove the performance of the model subroutine, other numerical examples will be presented and their computational costs will be discussed.
Plasticity after focal brain ischemia

The thesis is focused on brain ischemic injury with an accent on subsequent spontaneous and rehabilitation-induced plastic changes related to motor recovery. General part of thesis describes cortical anatomy and pathophysiology of brain ischaemia including classification of ischemia, ischemic cascade and reperfusion injury. There is also a chapter about spontaneous plasticity and recovery. The main part gives a survey of rat models of focal cortical ischemia, of functional assessment and rehabilitation. Results of rehabilitation-induced cortical plasticity are also presented.
The role of phenotypic plasticity in parallel altitudinal differentiation in Arabidopsis arenosa

Plants adjust to challenging environments by genetically fixed changes and phenotypically plastic response. Alpine environments pose multiple challenges to plant life including cold, high irradiance and short vegetative period. To survive such specific conditions, plants often significantly alter their morphology. In my thesis I studied to which extent specific traits of alpine ecotypes repeatedly appear among independently formed alpine populations and to which extent these changes represent fixed genotypic differentiation vs phenotypic plasticity. To address these questions I performed an experiment in which Arabidopsis arenosa plants from sixteen populations belonging to two ecotypes (alpine and foothill) were grown in conditions resembling alpine vs foothill conditions. Specifically, I modified levels of irradiance and temperature and complemented alpine-like and foothill-like treatment by additional two extreme treatments to reach full-factorial design. I used discriminant and classificatory analysis to examine the overall morphological differentiation characterised by set of twenty measured traits. Surface manifestation of melting within the ice shell of Europa

One of the most interesting extraterrestrial bodies in the Solar System is Europa, the icy satellite of Jupiter. This icy moon might have a sufficiently hospitable environment which could be harbouring life in the subsurface ocean deep under its icy crust. The thesis thoroughly examines the generation process of one of the surface formations called chaotic terrains. These huge areas of ice disruptions which uniquely characterize Europa's surface might play a significant role in the understanding of the inner structure of the moon. The latest research assumes the chaotic terrains form above liquid water lenses perched relatively shallow in the ice shell, however, no numerical simulations have been performed to confirm this theory. The goal of the thesis is to create a model which would validate the theory and explain the formation process of the chaotic terrains. The thesis runs several simulations, and our results suggest these water lenses and the process in the mantle might play a key role in the chaotic terrains formation.
Influence of hardening model on the results of cros-roll straightening simulation

This diploma thesis deals with simulation of cross-roll straightening using computational modeling with finite element method in software ANSYS. The main goal of this thesis is to quantify the influence of inaccurate knowledge of mechanical properties on the straightening process and correct setting of machine. It also aims for comparison of hardening models and their influence on the final curvature and residual stresses in the cross section of the bar.
