Euthanasia and its legislation

The aim of this thesis is the analysis of domestic legislation affecting euthanasia and analysis of such adjustments abroad. The author questions the appropriateness of such adjustments in the Czech Republic. The current legal regulation does not regulate euthanasia in any way, and so the adoption of such regulation is appropriate. Domestic experts criticize this fact for a long time. In the first part the author deals with the most comprehensive definition of the subject of euthanasia and its development abroad and, particularly, in the Czech Republic. Other parts, using the historical-empirical methods, deal with the legal arrangements and their analysis in the Benelux countries, where the euthanasia is legal under certain given conditions. They describe not only the current treatment, but also the path that led to it. In the last section the author assesses the non-legal aspects of euthanasia and outlines two basic directions, which the domestic legislation could take in the future.

Euthanasia represents one of the most controversial topics around the world. As I mentioned in the first chapter there is no worldwide consistency whether to accept the idea of legalization Active Voluntary Euthanasia ("AVE") or not. The goal of this diploma thesis is not to persuade anybody. In approximately 60 pages of the text I am providing readers with some essential information about euthanasia in the Czech Republic. I am also trying to compare the foreign legal regulation of euthanasia and assisted suicide but theoretical ideas as well. The first chapter is mainly trying to capture the reader's focus and setting the theme of my diploma thesis. The second chapter of my thesis is called ,,The Term Euthanasia". This chapter provides readers with several definitions of euthanasia and Physician Assisted Suicide ("PAS") as well as some historic data. The act of euthanasia has its origin in Greek. First word euthanasia is mentioned in old Greek literature. The term euthanasia is composed from two Greek words. Eu which means good or normal and Thanatos which means death. Euthanasia (in terms of some European countries - comparison)

Résumé Euthanasia is and always will be a hot topic of very heated debate among both non specialists and experts. The purpose of my thesis is to provide the reader with information about euthanasia and a list of rules dealing with the issue of euthanasia in selected countries. The introduction outlines the problems of euthanasia. The second chapter is devoted to clarifying the content of the notion of euthanasia, which comes from the Greek word for the phrase, "eu" meaning good and "thanatos" meaning death, a "good death", sometimes we can also meet the looser translation of euthanasia as a beautiful death. The content of the notion of euthanasia in the course of history changed. Today we see euthanasia as an act which one person intentionally ends the life of another person's own request with the intent to end her suffering. In the chapter are identified and defined forms of euthanasia, especially active and passive. The third chapter deals with the European Union's attitude to euthanasia. No law of the European Union explicitly addressed the euthanasia. Health policy in principle falls within the competence of national governments. The issue of euthanasia in the Czech Republic

This work is evaluating the topic of euthanasia in the Czech Republic and is divided into 4 main parts. First chapter is devoted to the topic of death and dying in conjunction with the concept of a person and dignity. Second chapter defines the concept of euthanasia, explains all related terms and presents some of the basic arguments for and against legalizing euthanasia. Third chapter presents Holland as a paradigm example of practicing euthanasia and outlines the stance of other parts of the world on euthanasia and assisted suicide. Last chapter is focusing on the state of legislation and ongoing public discussion about euthanasia in the Czech Republic. The aim is to map current situation and attempt to predict possible future development. This chapter also mentions the possibility of palliative care as a possible alternative for euthanasia.

Euthanasia in a film - an analysis of selected pieces

The diploma thesis titled Euthanasia in the film an analysis of selected pieces, is divided into theoretical and practical parts. I devoted to a description of a current state of euthanasia in the theoretical part. First I focused on definitions of euthanasia, assisted suicide etc. A chapter is also devoted to a history of euthanasia. I wanted to highlight the fact, that euthanasia is not only a problem of the modern society, but beginnings of a discussion about euthanasia we could find already in the ancient world. Through the concept of euthanasia in the Middle Ages and modern times I got up to the World War II, which is in my opinion an important milestone in the history of euthanasia, because at that time euthanasia was perceived as a tool for a disposal of persons who, in the context of its time, seemed to be undesirable. Among such people there were classified for example people so called racially unsuitable, weak and sick. Because there are legally different views of euthanasia, in chapters I mention the fact how euthanasia is perceived in the world. In terms of acceptance of euthanasia and assisted suicide I particularly emphasize the Netherlands and Switzerland. One chapter I also dedicate to euthanasia in the Czech Republic. It includes a description of the discussion and arguments for and against euthanasia. One more separate chapter I devoted to questions whether to legalize or not to legalize euthanasia. I found out that a discussion on this topic is very extensive and here could be applied the rule that each man has his own opinion. It turned out that even experts in one area, doctors of philosophers, are not unanimous in the issue of euthanasia and its pros and cons are from both sides argued with plenty of arguments that are worth thinking about. A separate chapter I devoted to a man, who I consider to be the main promoter of euthanasia and assisted suicide and if you pronounce his name, people would link him with that theme. This is Dr. Jack Kevorkian, nicknamed Dr. Death. Jack Kevorkian, who understood his acts as medical services for terminally ill people, helped with the voluntary termination of life to several hundred of people. Although he had written certain "rules" about the situations when he can people "help" to solve their suffering and pain, it turned out that those people in many cases had no anatomical evidence of disease in their body. Jack Kevorkian has had and even currently has many supporters and opponents. In case of Jack Kevorkian there are arguments for and against euthanasia as in the whole debate about it. The aim of the study was to analyse how the topic of euthanasia has been reflected in the film production. At the beginning of the research I have asked this research question: Which are usual attitudes to euthanasia reflected in filmmaking? In order to find out the given objective and to answer the research question I chose a qualitative research based on the method of disinterested observation of six selected movie titles. Titles in their alphabetical order were following: Doktor smrt (You Don´t Know Jack, USA, 2010, 134 min), Hlas moře (Mar adentro, Španělsko/Francie/Itálie, 2004, 125 min), Hodinu nevíš, Česko, 2009, 94 min), Invaze barbarů (Invasion barbares, Kanada/Fancie, 2003, 99 min), Millon Dollar Baby, (USA, 2004, 132 min) a Skafandr a motýl (Le Scaphandre et le papillon, Francie/USA, 2007, 107 min).

Euthanasia in the Czech Republic and Switzerland

The thesis deals with euthanasia in the Czech Republic and in Switzerland. It analyses the health system in these countries and the quality of palliative care there. It concerns with the Act on Public Services and focuses on euthanasia from the Czech legislative point of view. Next, the thesis deals with the issue of assisted suicide and its legislation in Switzerland and with the activities of organisations Exit and Dignitas, where the assisted suicide is carried out. It characterises Swiss health models and schemes and compares palliative care. An important role is played by ambulatory service provider Spitex specialized in home care. The conclusion of the thesis is the comparison of Czech and Swiss systems.

Euthanasy from the sight of medical staff in picked-up South-Bohemian hospitals

The main topic of this thesis was to find out how people view today the issue of euthanasia and what arguments they see for and against its legalization. The theoretical part is focused on the history of suicide and abuse of euthanasia in Nazi Germany, the legislation and attitude of individual states that permit or tolerate the merciful death or assisted suicide and the opinions of some Czech personalities. The empirical part expresses the views of nurses and with the help of a quantitative research, we are trying to find out if they are adequately informed in this field. By using an anonymous questionnaire we learn whether they agree or disagree with the legalization of euthanasia in the Czech Republic and whether their age, department they work in and the frequency of meetings with the dying patient has an effect on their opinion.

Types of Love in the Context of Bioethical Arguments

The thesis deals with kinds of love, their classification and characteristics. Another topic is euthanasia, its classification and arguments in favour of/against its legalisation. The basic aim of the thesis is to describe these concepts and to try to find a connection between them, to try to answer the question whether love can be argument for euthanasia, and if it can, then why.It tries to find possibilities and ways of action motivated by love, using cases already published of terminally ill people. It searches for the benefits of these findings for the work of a social worker.

Abstract Euthanasia from the points of view of theology and ethics Key words: euthanasia, suffering, death, dying, dignity, human rights, doctor, patient, palliative medicine, hospice care, assisted suicide, religious motivation, followers, objectors of euthanasia In my thesis I am covering the topic of ?qeuthanasia??. The main objective of this paper is to introduce the reader to the problem of euthanasia from the points of view of theology and ethics. This thesis consists of theoretical and practical parts. The theoretical part further consists of eleven chapters. In the first chapter, the types of euthanasia ares discussed (active, passive, prenatal, and assisted suicide). In the second chapter, the history of euthanasia is discussed in a great detail. The third chapter mainly concentrates on euthanasia in the world. The fourth chapter is about the criteria of death. In the fifth chapter, I address the questions of euthanasia and death in recent years. The sixth chapter is about the relationship between a doctor and a patient. The seventh chapter covers palliative medicine and the eighth chapter further expands on this subject with the topic of hospice care. In the ninth chapter, I pursue the point of religious motivational impact. The tenth and eleventh chapters are dedicated to the followers and objectors of euthanasia. The practical part concentrates on exploratory research. I have chosen sociological research using the methods of discussion. Here are three interviews with experts, who interact with dying individuals on a daily basis. These questioned specialists are believers and therefore the discourses are anonymous. The objective of these discussions was to uncover how professional in different facilities view the issues of euthanasia. This objective was sucessfully achieved.
