Milestones of grey literature in the Czech Republic

This poster aims to take you through the all-important milestones and moments of Czech grey literature history. The history is still brief, but not poor at all. Until 2005, the National Library of Technology in Prague (NTK) was in charge of distributing grey literature data from the Czech Republic into the System for Information on Grey Literature in Europe (SIGLE). That year, SIGLE was discontinued, and that led to a project at NTK to build the Czech National Repository of Grey Literature (NUŠL) in order not to lose valuable documents created outside the main publishing stream. The preparatory phase took about two years, and in 2008, the project began led by NTK with financial support from the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic. This was one of the biggest milestones for Czech grey literature, with NTK’s role shifting from contributor to central collector and leader of this topic in the Czech Republic. This year is the tenth anniversary since the kick off day of the project, and many things have changed since then, including software, features, design, people, and much more. The Seminar on Providing Access to Grey Literature that has been linked to the project from beginning has evolved as well. In 2014, it was transformed into an international Conference on Grey Literature and Repositories. This poster evaluates the progress of this repository and its efforts in collecting, preserving, sharing, providing accessibility to, and promoting grey literature in the Czech Republic. Past experiences lead us to consider the future of grey literature as in general as in case of NUŠL and maybe also its reassessment.

Sui Generis Database Rights and Official Work Exception

Sec. 94 of Copyright Act was amended by “Open Data act” in the way that official work exception applies mutatis mutandis, to the maker of the database. The new regulation it easier to work with public sector databases, including grey literature databases. However, it presents interpretation difficulties. This paper points to them and suggests solutions. The first part deals with sui generis database right in the context of grey literature. The second part analyzes the official work exception, its legal construction and the possibility of its application to sui generis database rights. The third part analyzes the transitional provision, which contains the amending act.

Postoj vyučujících a univerzitních pracovníků k šedé literatuře: průzkum provedený na Univerzitě Constantine 2

Scientific research requires the collection of a variety of information gathered from diverse resources. Grey literature is one of the information resources that may enrich researchers’ scientific works, but, in some situations, some users may not have a positive attitude towards grey literature for various reasons. We led a qualitative study at the University Constantine 2 where we arranged an interview with a representative sample of university teachers. The descriptive approach was adopted. Significant results will be presented to the audience of the conference.

Jsou starší vysokoškolské kvalifikační práce skutečně „šedé“? Pár komentářů k dědictví vědy a k šedé literatuře

Grey literature is often described as unpublished material, disseminated outside of commercial channels, not peer-reviewed and with limited referencing of information. Especially in the field of digitization projects, the term is also applied for older material and special collections. The objective of the paper is to analyse the meaning of “grey scientific heritage” and, based on empirical and conceptual elements, to contribute to a better understanding of grey literature. Special attention will be paid on older theses and dissertations (OTDs), as a main part of scientific heritage from universities.

Repozitář a portál GreyGuide: pokroky a posouzení rozvoje za 5 let!

In 2013, GreyNet International and the Institute of Information Science and Technologies of the National Research Council of Italy began work on the construction of the GreyGuide repository, which would house works of good practice in the field of grey literature. This joint venture soon expanded and came to also serve as GreyNet’s Web Access Portal. Now five years on ISTI-CNR – the service provider and GreyNet International – a content provider openly discuss their return on investments in human and information resources. The presentation concludes with an impact assessment and further course of action.

Jsme připraveni na budoucnost? Vliv umělé inteligence na management šedé literatury

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become part of our daily lives as it impacts the way we work, learn, communicate and entertain ourselves. AI also impacts information management. This paper examines this potential impact on grey literature management and is based on analysis of GL facets such as volume, variety, velocity and veracity. Examples of AI systems already implemented in similar activities are offered. The paper offers advice to grey literature managers regarding coming challenges.
