The study focus on the development of the eugenic movement in the Czech Lands before and during the Great War. Very specific position takes the analysis of the reception of classical genetics and increasing genetic knowledge between 1900-1915. Mentioned are the period leading figures like Ladislav Haškovec, Vladislav Růžička, František Čáda and Jaroslav Kříženecký.

Rise and Fall of the Institute of Microbiology of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. 1960s and 1970s

Institute of Microbiology of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences achieved important scientific advances in the 1960s, in spite of the political and ideological pressures of its time. In the period of the "Prague Spring" in 1968, became most of its workers, led by the Instiute Director Ivan Málek, engaged in the so called "revival process". After the short interlude of protests against Soviet occupation and subsequent apathy, the Communist Party installed in the Institute a new management whose drastic political measures supported by a small part of employees targeted several foremost scientists (especially I. Málek) and for years constrained the Institute's scientific activities.

Josef Macek - Between Repression and Indulgences

Contribution depicts the story of Josef Macek's life and his chances to dedicate himself to historical work in 1968-75, in particular after he was removed from the office of the Head of the Institute of History within the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences for his disapproving views of the August 1968 occupation of Czechoslovakia.

Organisation of the scientific and research base at the universities of agriculture in the years 1963-70

The political détente in the 60's made posiible a boom of various forms of the institutionalisation ofscientific research in the University of Agriculture Prague and Brno. Very significant were scientific and researchactivities in new workplaces of school farms and enterprises, in stations established under natural conditions and in special laboratories. Corporated bodies of the agricultural universities and of the Czechoslovac Academy of Science were founded for their common activity.

Czech Union of Scientific Workers

Prague Spring brought also an ambitious project of universal organisation of Czech scientific workers. The union was to combine professional, social and political purposes. Leading personalities of contemporary Czech science can be found between its members (Otto Wichterle, Bohumil Sekla, František Běhounek etc.). The study describes the short history (1968-1971) of the Union.
