John Hus as a first light of the first day. To the iconography of the Martinicka Bible

The essay is concerned with the question as to why is the earliest Czech depiction of the death of John Hus located next to an initial representing the creation of the world. It is probably a picture comment based on the relation of 2 Cor. 6,14: "Or what fellowship has light with darkness?" with Gn 1,4: "God saw that light was good, and he separated the light from darkness."

Analysis of the penetration of national languages into territorially Czech medieval and modern sepulchral inscriptions. The surprise is particularly small share of the German language between the Latin inscriptions and Czech inscriptions and their relatively late arrival in the ethnically German areas. Special features can be found in the inscription form and preferences of the script. Other languages are found only marginally.
Concept of gravestone in the sculptures of Jan Koblasa

The study centers on the work of Jan Koblasa (1932) that was intended for sacral places. More closely, it is about his work on gravestones, which was part of a larger concept of spiritual related activity of his. According to the text, there are two discernible approaches in his work. First, there are works that are dedicated to the memory of Koblasa´s close friends, and those bear signs of clearly personal approach. Examples of such work are the graves of poet Ivan Divis, painter Jiri Valenta or composer Milan Kymlicka, all found in Bohemia. Second approach is more universal and timeless, marked by minimalist design. An example is the grave of doctor Artur Rathke, which is located in a church in Germany. Towards the end, the text deals with the chapel in Neumünsteru and its layout.

The article analyses an iconography of marmor memorial desk of Prague humanist and a lector of Greek Matouš Collinus von Chotěřina (1516–1566), erected soon after his death. Especially two iconographical details are interpreted from a new perspective – a Greek abbreviation and a motive of two trees with letters hanging from their branches.

The publication includes a total of 33 papers presented at the 7th, 8th and 9th consultations. All the contributions are accompanied by a summary in German and extensive illustrations. Periodical international conferences on issues relating to sepulchral monuments have been held by the Institute of Art History, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, since the year 2000. Their main aim is to facilitate contact between interested representatives of all disciplines and fields of study that are related to the subject (art history, general history, auxiliary historical disciplines, archaeology, monument conservation, museology, restoration practice, petrography, etc.) in order to promote greater interdisciplinarity and coordination of previously unconnected research. The common denominator is a factual or methodical connection to Central European material and a primary factual or contextual focus on material sepulchral monuments in the restricted interpretation of the term.
