Ethical Principles of Czech Journalists in Reporting about Terrorism
Navrátilová, Barbora ; Hanzal, Jaromír (advisor) ; Groman, Martin (referee)
An emergency situation like terrorism brings many dilemmas to media ethics This thesis focuses on the question of how selected Czech journalists ethically cover the topic of terrorism, even though the Czech Republic has not experienced a major terrorist attack of the kind seen in Western Europe after 2015. First, the concept of terrorism and its forms and trends are described, then the relationship between terrorism and the media is presented. To illustrate how codes of ethics think about such events, three Czech audiovisual media codes and three foreign ones, available in English, are compared. In the empirical part, the paper focuses on data from qualitative research and follows the principles of grounded theory. Interviews with eight journalists provide insight into how they think about ethics when reporting on terrorism, what rules they have developed and what other ethical areas they draw rules from. Among the principles they name, verifying information, not publishing explicit footage without reason, or trying to suppress information about a terrorist. Another finding is that selected journalists perceive that terrorists want to gain visibility through the media and by reporting on the acts, journalists help fulfill their cause. The result of the thesis is not a comprehensive theory but an...

The theoretical part is focused on the definition of an emergency event and its classification according to the method of occurrence. The issue of civilian protection is also addressed, including the evacuation of civilians, warning of the population, evacuation bags, and improvised means of protection. The reader will also learn what a crisis situation is and how to distinguish between its types. The basic components of the integrated rescue system and their tasks are listed here as well. The last chapter covers selected emergency events and recommendations on how to behave during them. The practical part is devoted to the research survey itself. The results were evaluated from 142 questionnaires from residents of the Karlovy Vary region. The condition for...
Communication as part of nursing care in the emergency department
KREJČÍ, Natálie
Abstract The aim of this thesis was to chart the specifics of communication between nurses and patients in the emergency department. Two research questions were formulated based on this goal: "What are patients' experiences with communication from nurses in the emergency department?" and "What communication problems occur between nurses and patients in the emergency department?" Additionally, two hypotheses were developed, namely: "Nurses' knowledge of communication principles differs according to their level of education" and "Nurses' knowledge of communication principles differs by length of experience." A mixed research strategy was used, including semi-structured interviews and an unstandardised questionnaire. The study involved 12 patients treated in the emergency department and 216 nurses working in the department. The interviews were evaluated with the open coding method, using pencil and paper, and the results were subsequently categorised. Hypotheses were tested using nonparametric correlation Spearman's correlation coefficient in IBM SPSS Statistics 28 program. The results of the qualitative research emphasise the importance of communication in the emergency department. Patients evaluate their experiences primarily based on the approach and communication from the staff. The most frequently reported communication issues are unsuitable communication from nurses, followed by the staff not having enough time, high numbers of patients in the waiting room, and insufficient information. The quantitative results demonstrate a statistically significant effect between nurses' educational level and knowledge of communication principles. The test result yielded a p-value of 0.01%. Thus, the higher the educational attainment, the higher the knowledge of communication principles. In contrast, there was no statistically significant association between the length of experience and knowledge of communication principles. According to the test result, the p-value was 19.6%. Therefore, knowledge of communication principles is not related to nurses' experience. The most common barriers from the perspective of nurses are aggression from patients and a lack of time. One of the solutions to the barriers is certainly to increase the number of staff and to ensure lifelong communication skills education for nurses.

The knowledge of paramedics regarding the general overview and sorting methods (START, Identification and sorting card) was at a very good level. On the contrary, lower knowledge was reflected in the issue of trauma planning. Most of the interviewed paramedics pointed to good theoretical teaching, in preparation for dealing with an emergency, but the respondents emphasized the need to increase the frequency of practical training. Adapting training and practical exercises for the current needs of paramedics would certainly help.
