The Formation of South Sudan in an Agency Press Service of ČTK

Bachelor thesis "The Formation of South Sudan in an Agency Press Service of ČTK" deals with texts and photos that are related to the declaration of independence of South Sudan and issued by the Czech News Agency (ČTK) between 9 May and 9 September 2011 (i.e. two months before the announcement and two months after). The thesis describes the background of events that led to the collapse of Sudan, Africa's former largest country. It also deals with the general conditions for the formation of a new state in the current international situation. South Sudan is the youngest country in the world. Its independence is a result of a long- standing conflicts and the formation itself was a unique event - many areas around the world are trying to gain international recognition, but few succeed. The aim of this thesis is to find out how ČTK captured the formation of South Sudan. The thesis contains a comparison of all texts based on metadata, resources and type of posts. It is followed by an analysis of main topics of the texts. The thesis also examines whether the news provided by ČTK was unbiased. Next part of the thesis analyzes photographic materials covering the formation of South Sudan. There is also a part examining how ČTK deals with transcription of Arabic names and titles.
Possible future developments of South Sudan

This bachelor thesis provides information about the possible scenarios of future development in the Southern Sudan, focusing on democratization. The thesis is divided into 4 parts. The first chapter discuss democracy in Sub-Saharan Africa in general, the definition of democracy and democratization process and the factors that enable the democratization or not. The second part is dedicated to the theory of failed states and its indicators. The third chapter deals with the history of Sudan, which is relevant for the development of South Sudan and for the evaluation of possible developments. The accent here is put on the causes of civil wars in Sudan and its consequences, the analysis of internal and external participants of developments in Southern Sudan and the formation of Republic of South Sudan and the immediately following events. On these basis, the fourth chapter concentrates on possible future developments of South Sudan.
Petroleum industry of South Sudan as a factor influencing current events in South Sudan and relations between Sudan and South Sudan

Petroleum is one of the most important commodities traded on the international markets. World oil reserves are limited and therefore becoming increasingly important. Sudan and South Sudan control the sixth highest African oil reserves. However, both states have to face a number of problems which the petroleum industry brings. The bachelor project primarily focuses on South Sudan and its petroleum industry. The aim of the project is to describe how the petroleum industry of South Sudan influences the current events in South Sudan and the relations between Sudan and South Sudan.
The energy dimension of relationship between Sudan-South Sudan at the beginning of the 21st century and its impact on the future development

The thesis deals with the analysis of the oil industry in Sudan and South Sudan in the 21st century. The first part follows up the role of oil in the African continent; the history of oil production, the rest is devoted to a more detailed analysis of the oil sector in Sudan or South Sudan after 2011. Then the characteristics of future scenarios are realized. The scenarios are affected by the civil war in the South Sudan and border disputes between the North and the South.
The Analysis of the Conflicts in Sudan and the Influence of External Actors on their Development

This diploma thesis deals with the issue of the main conflicts in the Republic of Sudan. In the first part the author describes the historical development of Sudan with focus on the period from 1956 till today. The main attention in this section is devoted to the political and economical development as well as to foreign policy. The second part concentrates on the conflict between the northern and the southern part of the country. The author analyses the ethnical and religious background, the development of the civil war and the principles of the 2005 peace agreement with the view to the future of the separated states. Then, the author describes in detail the issue of the rebellion in the western province of Darfur, tries to elaborate on the reasons for the rebellion, the influence of foreign countries and the current state of negotiations between the Government of Sudan and the rebels from Darfur.The third part focuses on the foreign policy of The United States of America, the European Union, China and Egypt. The author selected these countries as having the major impact on the development of Sudan and the both conflicts. Last chapter of the thesis looks at the challenges that Sudan and South Sudan will have to face in the near future. Finally, the author elaborates on the impact of these issues on international policy and the space for possible external policies in Sudan and Southern Sudan.
