Project of Educational cycle trail in the Protected Landscape Area in Bohemian Karst

Title: Project of Educational cycle trail in the Protected Landscape Area in Bohemian Karst Objective: The objective of this work was to create an Educational cycle trail in the Protected Landscape Area of the Bohemian Karst. The trail, natural and cultural attractions and other information process into guidebook which will be available at tourist information centers and on the Internet. Methods: Collecting and sorting information about the natural and cultural wealth of the region. Summarizing information in guidebook and creating a trail. Subsequent test the applicability of a booklet form of a questionnaire to a group of cyclists who created the route with the completed booklets. Results: The results of this work are two proposal of Educational cycle trail in the Protected Landscape Area of the Bohemian Karst, which are processed into guidebook that contains trail description, information about each trail and map material. The final form of the trail is also based on results of questionnaires and direct responses of testees. The guidebook can be offered to information centers in the area of Bohemian Karst or through them be available in electronic form on the Internet. Succession of mollusk assemblages in quarries of Bohemian Karst

Molluscan succession was studied in 18 abandoned limestone quarries of different age in Bohemian Karst. The number of species in studied quarries increases in the time. The less species were found in the oldest quarries. This trend was probably caused by habitat diversity decline although it is not conclusive. The best predictors of mollusk species composition are type of surrounding vegetation, light and the cover of tree layer. It is important to take into account correlations of the other environmental variables with light and the cover of tree layer. Compositions of mollusk assemblages of north and south-facing slopes differ, but these differences diminish with ongoing succession. Quarries represent suitable model sites for the study of succession.
Factors affecting succession in abandoned mines

Extraction of limestone in protected landscape areas is a huge phenomenon and problem at the moment. Need of its quantity and quality constantly rise. The pressure to expand mining areas, which are located on places with considerable landscape and culture wealth, is rising as well. Returning of damaged territories back to natural cycle from which they have been forcibly extracted is even a bigger problem. The great unknown is whether it is better to proceed by means of reclamation or let the territory to its own evolution - spontaneous succession. In my thesis I am going to deal with the problems of spontaneous succession and factors affecting it. It is important to find out how plants can spread to left and open areas after mining, where they are going to be the first inhabitants. The fieldwork take place Cerinka quarry in Czech Karst. The aim of the study is to collect informations how plants can spread from maternal habitats and try to find out if there are any hurdles, which could hinder plants in the expansion. By doing this it should be possible to identify why how to support spreading of the target species to the site. The research is based on regular collection of phytosociological relevés at the site. Flora of southwestern part of Bohemian Karst

Since its begining in 19th century the floristic research in Bohemian Karst as a biogeographic region was not equivalent in all its parts. I was trying to collect informations about south-western part which is usually somehow overlooked compared to central or north-eastern part. Information include geological and klimatic definitions of the area as well as history of floristic research done here. Several studies we have from this area mention some interesting places with very interesting plant species. Still most of those localities aren't enough protected and are slowly (somewhere not really slowly) getting destroyed. The last part contains ideas and methodics for potential new mapping of flora in this area.
Factors affecting the course of primary succession in queries

Abandoned quarries represent very important habitats for ecology and conservational biology: they have a potential to become refuges of species diversity in present landscape, strongly disturbed by humans. Natural value of these localities increases in case the localities are left for natural development and spontaneous succession, or if they are managed with the aim to obtain a natural community. To be able to do such a management is necessary to understand the mechanisms of succession as much as possible. In the theoretical part of my thesis I deal with factors, which can affect the course of succession in different ways, especially with climate, soil conditions, seed dispersal and interactions among plants and between plants and animals. This thesis is a theoretical basis for a research in quarry Čeřinka in the Czech Karst Protected Landscape Area. Dispersal abilities of species from the surrounding communities, changes in abiotic conditions at the localities and changes in species composition will be studied. The results of these studies should contribute to our understandings of primary succession in abandoned quarries and I am going to deal with them in my future diploma thesis.
Limestones of Český kras and their use for hydraulic limes and natural cements

ii Summary This bachelor thesis is focused on the possible use of limestones from the Český kras area for the preparation of alternative inorganic binders, namely for hydraulic limes and natural cements. In the introductory chapters, the geology of Český kras is described. Silurian and Devonian beds make the most important lithostratigraphic members. Then, the history of limestone exploitation and processing is explained. It is followed by the petrographical characteristic of limestone - its mineralogical and chemical composition, the structure and the texture, the classification, the genesis and the diagenesis. Major part of the thesis focuses on inorganic binders - their basic characterization and evaluation. Limestones are discussed from the point of their general use in the industry. The limestones from the Český kras area are analyzed based on their chemical composition (based on the previously reported data) and evaluated for the potential use for burning of hydraulic limes and natural cements.
Productivity dynamics of herb layer in the thermophilous oakwood in the Nature Reservation Na Voskopě (Czech Karst) with respect to the solar radiation intensity

The Nature Reserve Na Voskopě is a special site where a long-term experiment was established in 2013, dealing with the switch of a long abandoned coppice back to its actively managed form. The project aims to examine the long-term impact of the proposed measures on the structure and diversity of plant species in herb layer especially in lighter woods at lower altitudes. The specific aim of this study was to examine the hypothesized crucial role of light conditions on the dynamics of plant biomass production in the undergrowth of such experimentally opened up thermophilous oak-dominated stand. A design was set up based on 40 permanent plots, where there were taken biomass samples from the herb layer in 2015. Further on, hemispherical images of forest canopy were photographed in the centre of each permanent plot. These images were evaluated in the analytical program WinScanopy, which calculates the amount of direct and diffuse radiation. The obtained datasets were evaluated by the regression analysis. The only decisive variable affecting the productivity of the herb layer turned to be diffuse radiation. The biomass data were also compared with light conditions sampled in the previous season (2014) as a part of ongoing experimental research. Season 2014 is characterized as a normal one and we managed to find a much stronger relationship between light conditions in 2014 and biomass productivity in 2015. Light conditions in season 2015 were significantly affected by the extremely dry and hot weather leading to strong defoliation of forest canopy. Still, we managed to demonstrate the positive impact of light conditions for the production of herb layer biomass. Weather extremes may also indicate an increase in biomass production in the next season, since a significant proportion of nutrients remained unused in the soil due to stopping the growth of vegetation. The current composition of the vegetation is very often determined by the extreme events in the abiotic environment occurring not long ago. Hemispherical images also proved as a very effective way to determine the light conditions, so it is also recommended to use for further research.
Bryophytes of dry grasslands in southern part of PLA Český kras

The aim of the thesis was to survey the occurrence of mosses in the different types of calcareous dry grasslands in the southwestern part of the Bohemian Karst and assess the impact of major abiotic and biotic factors to their diversity.At seven habitat types was acquired a total of 35 plots of 1x1 m. The most important factor influencing the diversity of mosses turned out to be the degree of coverage of herb layer markedly influenced by used type of management.Dry grasslands with Festuca pallens (T3.1) and Sesleria grasslands (T3.2) appeared to be rich in moss species. Conversely mossy low diversity here is presented by broad-leaved dry grasslands (T3.4).
Vegetation succession on abandoned limestone quarries of Czech Karst

Organization and conduct of a geological excursion to the Bohemian Karst

This Master thesis summarizes the characteristics of geological conditions in the Bohemian Karst and presents a proposal for organizing a geological excursion for lower-level gymnasium students or ninth-grade pupils to this territory. The goal of this Thesis is to set up a methodological proposal for preparing an excursion to the Bohemian Karst. It sums up the theoretical assumptions for organizing a geological excursion, lays down methodological proposals for on-site work and compiles worksheets.
