Assessing the impact of the growth of the 'Sharing Economy' in European Cities
Payne, Joshua Alex Marco ; Oude Nijhuis, Dennie (vedoucí práce) ; Galent, Marcin (oponent)
This thesis looks at this situation in four central European cities - Prague, Krakow, Budapest, and Warsaw - to better understand the motivations behind their respective policy responses to the challenges and opportunities that have emerged due to the rise of the STHR sector. This thesis focuses primarily upon the local government response when discussing regulation - much of the policy implemented concerning the STHR market has been done at a granular level, usually with cities making the call on how best to manage the phenomenon.12 In some instances, this regulation can even be set on a hyper-local district scale, as is the case in central Budapest.13 However, there are now calls for wide-reaching rules to be implemented through national and supranational structures - such as at the European Commission level - to support cities and communities trying to cope with the regulatory challenge of STHRs.14 Very recently, there has also been a noticeable increase in cooperation between city leadership looking to lobby legislative bodies so as to further the scope of their regulatory powers - an interesting development when attempting to better understand and explain the diversity of regulatory responses from European cities. Fortuyn's Foundations of Homonationalism (Homonationalism in Dutch everyday life)
Brons, Wouter ; Janse, Maartje (vedoucí práce) ; Galent, Marcin (oponent)
In 2006 Puar defined homonationalism as a form of nationalism that utilizes gay rights to exclude (Muslim minorities). This thesis analyzes the development of Dutch homonationalism from 1990-2002. It finds that the origins and development of homonationalism are rarely discussed. Only research by Bram Mellink focused on the origins of Dutch homonationalism between 1980 and 1990. By analyzing the selected period, this research tries to bridge the gap between the origins of Dutch homonationalism and the full fledged Dutch homonationalism that can be found in the 21st century. It applies a framework that is grounded in established theories and understandings of homonationalism, to reflect on the theoretical foundations of homonationalism and their historical applicability. This paper finds that utilizing homonationalism and its manifestations as they were defined by Puar is in fact ahistorical. Consequently, under the chosen theoretical framework homonationalism is rarely found. Therefore, this research identifies a developing form of homonationalism: proto-homonationalism. To support further research, it establishes a new framework to analyze this proto-homonationalism. The findings of this research thus establish the weaknesses of applying homonationalist theory to historical periods and provide an...
The meritocratic division: a restructuration of cleavages in the West? - Insight from the Yellow Vests movement.
Forel, Alexis ; Galent, Marcin (vedoucí práce) ; Stepanovic, Vera (oponent)
The attempts to understand discontent and populist surges in the West, especially in recent years, led to an abundance of research, comments, and speculations. Some thinkers asserted that such events are the symptoms of a cleavage restructuration in liberal democratic societies that would be centered around the question of merit. Research generally links higher education and general success in life to satisfaction and relative support of the established order. On the contrary, lesser educated and successful individuals tend to question this state of affairs. A cleavage revolving around success and education would consequently replace previous divisions, such as the usual right-left opposition, but also come on top of other schisms, mainly spatial ones. This thesis offers to verify the existence of such a cleavage with a case study of the Yellow Vests movement, in France. Analyzing the discourse of the representants of the meritocracy, Emmanuel Macron and his government, it finds trends that support the existence of such an underlying conflict.
