Lubrication of polymer machine elements, such as polymer gears, is a current subject of the interest in multiple mechanical engineering applications in terms of simulation of lubrication processes and optimization of tribological conditions to increase the performance of these elements. The present dissertation thesis deals with an experimental study of the development of the fluid-film thickness in elastohydrodynamically lubricated compliant contacts. The main aim of the thesis is to clarify the formation of film thickness in compliant contacts operating in the transition region (TR) between isoviscous-elastic (I-E) and piezoviscous-elastic (P-E) modes of the elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) regime. For this purpose, laboratory experiments were performed on the rotary optical tribometer in ball-on-disc configuration, and the method of optical chromatic interferometry was implemented. Both the rheological response of the lubricant and the constitutive viscoelastic response of the polymer to the formation of the fluid-film thickness were experimentally analyzed. Based on the results, the low validity of the I-E and P-E film thickness prediction models in the TR region was documented. The findings presented in this thesis extend the knowledge of the formation of lubricant film in compliant contacts operating in the EHL regime and can thus be considered in the design of polymer machine elements or in lubrication management.
