However, the socio- environmental challenges linked to the extraction of lithium, as well as other minerals that are labelled as 'critical', raise the question of whether this transition can actually be called 'green'. This thesis critically examines the role of discourse in shaping the geopolitics of lithium, which is based on the post-structuralist notion that social and discursive practices are linked. To research this, a critical discourse analysis is conducted, which analyses how the lithium cooperation between the EU and Chile has been shaped by their respective dominant discourses on critical minerals. The lithium cooperation between the EU and Chile is an important geopolitical topic, as Chile holds the greatest lithium reserves globally and in the EU demand for the mineral is increasing drastically as a result of the...
From Environmental Discourses to Environmental Policies
Cacre, Marta ; Casaglia, Anna (vedoucí práce) ; Butler, Eamonn (oponent)
From Environmental Discourses to Environmental Policies August 2023 2713415C (Glasgow) 233471 (Trento) 99522802 (Prague) Presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of International Master in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies Word Count: 22,359 Supervisor: Anna Casaglia Date of Submission: 10/08/2023 2 Abstract This study investigates the impact of discourse on the formulation of environmental policies and their potential implications for tackling the challenges posed by climate change. Discourse analysis is utilised to examine the conceptualization of climate change and proposed solutions within the framework of municipal environmental policy in Barcelona. The investigation is guided by two fundamental research inquiries: firstly, how is the notion of climate change portrayed in these policies, and secondly, what types of environmental discourse are utilised? Furthermore, what impact does the selected discourse have on the determination of particular solutions aimed at addressing the issue? The primary subject of examination pertains to the Barcelona Energy, Climate Change, and Air Quality Plan for the period of 2011-2020, as well as the Climate Emergency Action Plan for the year 2030. This study illustrates the evolution of our comprehension of climate change over time,...

Unmasking the Gendered Power Play in Feminist Foreign Policy - Why It Is Breaking Boundaries, But Not Chains? A Comprehensive Analysis of Sweden's Feminist Foreign Policy through its Arms Exports Industry July 2023 By Stella Caroline den Hartog Glasgow: 2711866D Dublin: Charles: 67499995 Presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of International Master in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies (IMSISS) Word Count: 22,385 Supervisor: Helen Hardman Date of Submission: July 26th, 2023 Abstract The focus of this research is in the area of feminist foreign policy and arms exports. The purpose of this research was to outline objectives driving feminist foreign policy in light of its arms sector identifying hurdles to successful delivery of the former. The research methods used include qualitative data analysis of the empirical findings of Sweden's feminist foreign policy, and quantitative data analysis of the democratic status of Pakistan, its gender gap index, and gender-based violence rates. The findings from this research provide evidence that Sweden does not align with its feminist foreign policy objectives and goals in the arms exporting sector, showing poor adherence to democratic status of recipient states, and the risk of illicit arms trade and proliferation linked to...
Grassroot Organisations and the logics of humanitarianism: the framing of and actions towards People on the Move on the Aegean Island of Lesvos
Dolska, Elzbieta Maria ; Casaglia, Anna (vedoucí práce) ; Tsourapas, Gerasimos (oponent)
This research analyses the ways in which Grassroots Organisations (GOs) interact with the logics of humanitarianism, while providing assistancetothe People on theMove (POM) on Lesvos, Greece. In doing so, it investigates how GOs position themselves vis-a-vis the core humanitarian principles (humanity, neutrality, impartiality, independence). Incorporating evidence from participant observation and semi- structured interviews, this study demonstrates that GOs tended to embrace the principle of humanity, independence, and impartiality (to an extent that the current socio-political situation allows), while strictly non-conforming to the principle of neutrality. Upon consideration of their approach towards, and the framing of the People on the Move, the praxes of Grassroots Organisations have been found to stand in sharp contrast to the functioning of the well-established humanitarian actors. Consequently, GOs contested the harms and violence of the current European border regime and Greek approach to migration, through a variety of practices of a varying political character. Ultimately, addressing the time and scope limitations, this research recommends that future academic enquiries evaluate factors accounting for the establishment, development, and disappearance of GOs, which would allow for...
Securitisation of the Brazilian Amazon: Roots, development and implications
Nascimento Dantas, Ana Julia ; Casaglia, Anna (vedoucí práce) ; Leonard, Sarah (oponent)
This work uses Foucault's critical discourse analysis to investigate the roots, development and implications of the securitisation of the Amazon conducted by Bolsonaro's administration. Through the examination of speeches, interviews, policy papers, laws, provisional measures and decrees, this paper demonstrates that the securitisation is taking place to facilitate natural exploitation, rather than protecting the Amazon rainforest. The anti- environmental agenda is an extension of the economic and political agendas of the administration, dedicated to foster the commodification of Amazonian natural resources for the economic gain of agrarian elites. This mainly serves the purpose of maintaining power through the increase of political support of the administration by ruralist parties in the Congress. To disrupt environmental protection, the administration sought to dismantle federal environmental authorities by weakening their monitoring competencies, by persecuting their civil servants and by substituting specialists in leading positions for militaries with no prior experience in the field. As such, the administration conducted a militarisation of the Amazon built upon controversial nationalist narratives and a portrayed idea that the Armed Forces are the only actor entitled to secure the Amazon,...
From blood and soil to ecogram: A thematic analysis of eco-fascist subculture on Telegram
Farrell-Molloy, Joshua ; Střítecký, Vít (vedoucí práce) ; Casaglia, Anna (oponent)
Despite being a fringe ideology, eco-fascism has gained widespread interest since 2019 with its connection with terrorist violence. The 2019 Christchurch, El Paso and 2022 Buffalo attackers' manifestos all expressed environmental ideas and incorporated climate change into the justifications for their actions. Considering the severity of the threat posed by this lineage of violence, this dissertation aims to identify the dominant narratives and themes within eco-fascist affiliated Telegram channels. It also seeks to contextualise findings by connecting themes, where possible, as representative of either a distinct eco-fascist subculture or militant accelerationist movement, understanding the extent to which each has an influence on the 'Ecogram' community. The findings conclude that Ecogram can be considered a melting pot of green far-right tendencies. Dominant themes all revolved around the twin pillars of anti- modernism and the natural order. Keywords: Eco-fascism, Far-right, Anti-modernism, Ted Kaczynski, White Supremacy, accelerationism, Siege-culture
The environmental aspect of peacekeeping missions
Carlesi, Camilla ; Casaglia, Anna (vedoucí práce) ; Kilroy, Walt (oponent)
Peacekeeping missions account for more than half of UN emissions and are among the top polluters on Earth. Thus, taking into consideration the environmental aspect of these operations is relevant to address local grievances and mitigate the impact of troops themselves. Responding to local environmental problems and targeting the behavior of peacekeepers is ultimately relevant to enhance the successfulness of the mission, preserve UN credibility and foster global environmental protection. After a careful review of the literature background connected to this field, this research outlines UN green efforts in general and later focuses on MONUSCO and UNMISS, as significant examples of ongoing operations which contribute to a large portion of UN emissions. Overall, this dissertation questions the existence of environmental plans in these two cases, their connection to the academic field and their possible improvements. To conduct this exploration, UN green plans in MONUSCO and UNMISS are analyzed in their pre, intra and post-deployment efforts with the aim of highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. In addition, the findings are assessed against the main scholarly arguments and used to advance recommendations and challenges. The results coming from this work shed light on the current gaps in the...
