Biblioverse - Multifunctional building with library

The project works with the archaic image of the library as a "temple of knowledge" and at the same time, tries to shift its current institutional subtext, based on the idea of knowledge accumulation, towards its careful selection and interpretation. In earlier times, information was a scarce commodity and access to education was the privilege of a few social classes, closely connected to power. In the second half of the 19th century, the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution brought political and technological changes in the dissemination of information, that continue to accelerate. The machine printing of newspapers and books, the train, the telegraph, and later the telephone, as precursors to the digital dissemination of information, made it possible to transport information in quantities and at speeds previously unimaginable. Modern public institutions, public libraries among them, are emerging to make knowledge accessible to all. Today, however, it seems that it is not the desire for quantity of information and knowledge, but the desire and need to understand the world around us, that is immutable in human nature. The threshold, where being overwhelmed with information does not contribute to finding meaning and one's own position in the world, is now part of our everyday experience. The concept of a library based on the accumulation and easy retrieval of information seems redundant in the age of digital communication, and a principle that worked before may not work today. At the same time, the fact that libraries still work primarily with the medium of the physical book anchors the library in irrelevance. As a mediator of the image of the past, it ignores the present and its pressing issues. The medium of the book, on the other hand, can also be seen as the greatest privilege of libraries in the digital world, which however makes them a different institution. In this project, I therefore propose a new concept of the library as a centre of information management, whose aim is to make information available in a valid way. Librarians, as information specialists, are both curators of the institution's content and of the way it is "exposed" to the public. The library therefore adopts the principles of other Enlightenment institutions such as the museum and the gallery. Librarians/curators are working with a particular topical theme that culminates in its publicly available organized catalog during its exposure. The result is a curated selection of information on that topic - a collection presented in an appropriate manner that reflects current expectations and world views. An apparatus that responds to the present and underpins it with the past. A place to pause and reflect in-depth on a defined topic.

The proposal consists of three separate buildings connected with a pedestrian path. Two buildings fill the structure of the block and one main library building is placed in between them. Form of the plan of the main building is based on the tweening of the two edge buildings and is reflecting their geometrical relation. Main idea of creating a barrier free pedestrian path across the whole site and thus connecting the two bordering streets is realized by a series of communications such as ramps, stairs and elevator. Program of the site and its buildings is symmetrically spreading from the middle, where the main library building stands . Emphasizing the spread of the knowledge from the library through culture into the city and allowing regular pedestrians to experience it. Two edge buildings serve as basic structures providing shelter and infrastructure for operating different programs and facilities such as cafe, theater, performing events, exhibitions, lectures etc. Main library building is an enclosed building with different spaces for studying, working, absorbing information and community meetings.

In order to properly understand the things and information around us, we learn to categorize, organize and put them in the ''right'' positions. This order of metaphysical sequence requires the idea of an indisputable first (original) instance whose identity is independent of what may come after it. Thus, for example, the good is the primary instance, while the bad (defined as the absence of the good) is secondary. Similarly with the natural and the unnatural, the normal and the abnormal. By using presupposed language and perspectives, certain groups of users marginalize the perspectives of other users and give the impression that some perspectives are normal and others are not. The way libraries, temples of scholarship, are often constructed with the aforementioned assumptions. Typologies of library buildings often have a clear order, categorizing, defining, giving a clear message. It guides and navigates us to where we belong according to our assumed activity. Such a constructed space is probably well-intentioned, but it does not offer the necessary freedom; on the contrary, it forces visitors to follow archaic stereotypes and conventions. What is normal. Such a space resembles a well-written choreography. A library pretending to be a free public space in reality functions more like an anonymous book lending library, an individual reading room, an anxious casemate, where by not respecting the rules of typology your visit can come to a quick end. To what extent can the space be used for debate or other forms of human interaction?

reSOURCE LIBRARY In the institution of the library, knowledge is not only formed on the basis of already formulated facts, information and presented conclusions, but equally on the basis of procedural knowledge. The importance of the library does not lie in the preservation of books, rather it should be a nexus of knowledge. A place where one can learn and at the same time put that knowledge into relations. It should provide a ground for knowledge sharing and not just for individual processing of information. Re-newal, re- storation and re-generation. By combining books as storage of information, craft workshops and re-use centre of circular economy a complex system is being created, reacing to fragmented structure of re-use centres in Brno. The library is a place that forms a solid framework for ever-changing knowledge and its spatial manifestations. It is not a static warehouse, but a dynamic ecosystem that is being constantly replenished.

The decentralized multifunctional library project is located in the block between Sladová and Pekařská streets. In order to achieve maximum flexibility and adaptability, the entire design has been divided into modules. This way of dividing the space offers different levels of permeability, which encourages communication and collaboration between users. The buildings thus create a boundary between intimate and public spaces that communicate with each other through the steel frame structures.
