Vox Populi, Vox Dei? The Politicisation of Abortion in the United States
Pazos Puig, Paula ; Hynek, Nikola (vedoucí práce) ; Bujnoch, Louis (oponent)
The Supreme Court's recent overturning of Roe v. Wade, and with it the constitutional right of abortion, has sparked a debate on the limits of state interference with certain fundamental and private rights. This thesis aims to explore the legal and theoretical framework that allows putting certain fundamental rights, and more specifically that of abortion, up for a vote, and analyses the particularities of the abortion debate through liberalism's political conceptions of justice as fairness. In addition, a conceptualisation of abortion as a human security matter than can be incorporated into the security agenda is provided, which allows for the protection of abortion as a fundamental right.
The Hidden Debt Scandal in Mozambique: Analysing the Impact of Elite Corruption on Human Security
Bengtson, Ebba Charlotta ; Kilroy, Walt (vedoucí práce) ; Bujnoch, Louis (oponent)
This thesis aims to investigate the detrimental effects of elite corruption on the level of human security experienced by a state's citizens, employing the 2016 Hidden Debt Scandal in Mozambique as a case study. The Hidden Debt Scandal involved the misappropriation and concealment of $2 billion in unapproved loans secured against the state's assets, obtained by an elite group of politicians and businessmen. By analysing various indices and data sources from the period spanning 2012 to 2022, the research evaluates the impact of the debt scandal on different aspects of human security as described in the 1994 Human Development Report by the United Nations Development Programme. These aspects include the economic, political, food, health, environmental, personal, and community pillars of human security, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of potential threats and consequences. The findings indicate a worsening trend in a many of the indices following the Hidden Debt Scandal, however, some data does not align with that expected outcome. Additionally, the study acknowledges the influence of other economic, political, social, and environmental factors that may have contributed to human insecurity in Mozambique during the specified timeframe. Consequently, it is argued that while the Hidden Debt...
Unifying a Divided Nation: Exploring the Challenges and Prospects for Peaceful Korean Reunification
Mun, Hayeong ; Ludvík, Jan (vedoucí práce) ; Bujnoch, Louis (oponent)
This research is prompted by recent findings highlighting a declining trend in support for reunification among South Koreans, which contradicts the conventionally prevailing narrative of reunification as both "our dream" and a "national duty." Whilst the question of what diminishes enthusiasm for reunification among South Koreans might seem self-evident-given Korea's over 70-year division and the disparate paths taken by the North and South- this research aims to provide a more in-depth diagnosis. It seeks to identify the social constructs that have developed within this prolonged division affecting South Koreans' perceptions of reunification. Employing a social constructivist lens, the study focuses on underexplored dilemmas specific to South Koreans in the context of intergroup relations and reunification. Grounded in Social Identity Theory and Integrated Threat Theory, the study formulates hypotheses relating to the interplay between South Koreans' perceived "otherness" towards North Koreans, intergroup threat perceptions, and attitudes towards reunification. Using the 2022 Reunification Consciousness Survey (N=1193) data from the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies (IPUS), this study runs statistical analysis through SPSS and Hayes' PROCESS Macro Model 4 to test the hypotheses. The...
