Establishment of cutting conditions for selected aircraft parts

This paper provides an overview of nickel based superalloys, their turning with high pressure jet assistance, it also concerns optimization methods for such a turning and tool wear analysis. This work was requested by the company Safran, with the experimental part performed at the production plant of Evry-Corbeil, France. The experimental study concerns the optimization of cutting conditions for internal rough turning of aircraft parts with high pressure jet assistance. The objectives of the study were following: comparison of different cutting inserts selected by the company, proposal of several roughing strategies, and determination of the optimal conditions for each strategy. Two different strategies are considered for the experiment: cutting with constant feed and depth of cut, and ramping strategy. For each strategy, the operation was performed in face and longitudinal turning. The results were compared according to the economic and productive criteria.
