Doba vlády císaře Karla IV. byla českou společností 19. století vnímána jako zlatý věk dějin země. Společně s postavou panovníka se stávaly předmětem zájmu také stavby související s jeho zakladatelskou činností. Kromě katedrály sv. Víta patřil k nej významnějším právě Karlštejn. Dodnes není zcela jasné za jakým účelem nechal Karel IV. v blízkosti Prahy tento královský hrad vlastně postavit. 1 Uschování svatých ostatků, říšských korunovačních insignií i důležitých listin však svědčí o tom, že pevnost měla pro císaře naprosto unikátní význam. Velmi často sem panovník přijížděl před důležitými státnickými rozhodnutími, ovšem později jeho návštěv ubylo. Prostory hradu měl zřejmě až příliš propojené se svou třetí ženou Annou Svídnickou, a po její smrti zanevřel. Mnohem častěji pobýval na hradě Tangermünde, který Karlštejn svojí vnitřní výzdobou v mnohém připomíná. Hrad se měl stát rezidencí jeho nej staršího syna a nástupce Václava IV., ovšem ten si místo příliš neoblíbil. V době husitských válek se Karlštejn stal nedobytnou pevností katolické strany.2 Roku 1446 sem byly přemístěny svatováclavské klenoty, čímž byl hradu propůjčen nový význam. Po velkém požáru Pražského hradu roku 1541 bylo rozhodnuto umístit sem kopie zemských desek. Změna nastala na počátku 17. století, kdy Karlštejn svůj dřívější smysl...

Czech portrait medal of the past and present

This diploma thesis deals with Czech portrait medals in the past and present. The aim was to map Czech medal portrait work from its origins in the Renaissance to the present. At the beginning, the work is focused on the precious metals from which the medals are made, gold and silver. The history of gold and silver is included in the theory. The concepts of numismatics or commemorative medals made of gold and silver as investment preservation of real value are clarified. We were interested in the overall artistic process of producing portrait medal into the final product. The historical development of medals in the Czech lands followed. In each period, important artists, medalists, and their work are mentioned. All chapters contain pictorial materials. The practical part is devoted to all existing mintages of Karel Gott, which is a unique medal investment. Along with him, contemporary medal artists are characterized in more detail. In the end, the first findings about the portrait medal are summarized. The work brings an overall view of portrait medal work. Medal making represents a specific area of fine and sculptural art. "The stone guardian of a glorious past" The changes in the perception of the Karlštejn Castle by the Czechs and the Germans in Bohemia during the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries

In the thesis I have tried to capture the shifts in the perception of the Karlštejn Castle in the historical memory of the Czech and German society in a wider political-cultural context. The Czech nationalists saw the castle as a symbol of the Czech nation's fate, because the nation lived through the time of its foremost glory during the reign of Emperor Charles IV. But their symbol was mostly neglected and forgotten in their time. Amongst the Germans, the romantic idea of the Karlštejn Castle having been built according to a mythical castle known from the Holy Grail legends was widespread. The building, then in decay, was thoroughly reconstructed between the 1880s - 1890s. The reconstruction was done by the renowned architects of that time, Friedrich Schmidt and Josef Mocker. The Czech political representation promoted the renovation of the Karlštejn Castle in connection with their State-law demands, which were supposed to culminate in the reconstruction of this medieval castle and the royal coronation of the Austrian emperor with the Crown of St. Wenceslas. The medieval building was wrongly said to have been the original place where the crown jewels had been kept. In the historical memory of the German society, the Karlštejn Castle remained the remembrance of the glory of the Holy Roman Empire...
