Ability of social workers and workers in social care system to deal with agressivness in clients with serious mental handicap
VLACHOVÁ, Lucie
Aggression and aggressive behaviour of clients is a common part of life in a social facility. Employees are trained to cope with inappropriate behaviour of clients and often have to deal with really awkward situations and have to try hard to prevent the increase of frequency of such behaviour. This issue is really topical and it is necessary to say that the employees do not always cope with the situation in a way that would pose minimum harm to both the client and the social worker. In the introduction I dealt with clarification of types of mental retardation, I looked in detail at its degrees according to international classification of diseases. I also mentioned most frequent associated diseases and types of services and facilities that are available to people with disabilities. I would like to provide a reader of the thesis with a complex overview of this issue and thus I deal not only with basic concepts that relate to the topic (mental retardation, autism, social worker or facilities of social care), but I also try to uncover it and bring it closer to wider range of personnel in social services. Quantitative methods of data gathering were applied for the thesis. I used a quantitative questionnaire in a printed form to obtain the data. The data showed that all 42 respondents (100%) experienced at least once in their life aggressive behaviour of their clients. At a time when a client behaved aggressively, to divert his attention to an alternative activity helped in most cases to cope with the situation. Alternatively, to calm down the client verbally or to use verbal calming down in combination with grip techniques also helped. The objective of the thesis was to clarify causes of aggressive behaviour of a client with heavy mental retardation, to mention some triggers of this behaviour and to focus on particular methods used by workers in social services ? both on systematic work with an individual or in a group, or on grip techniques. If client?s elementary needs are fully met ? the workers are regularly trained and follow a structured regime that is really beneficial for a client with heavy mental retardation ? the frequency of aggressive behaviour is significantly lower.
