Zlutice Gradual

Zlutice gradual The goal of this work is to summarize literature for problems of genesis and decor of Zlutice gradual, further analyse its illuminations and also basic orientation in questions of analogies of its decor. Zlutice gradual is one of the best Renaissance manuscripts. Penman was Jan Taborsky from Klokotska Hora and his life and production is defined in the chapter 3.1. Fabian Puler was limner gradual and his creations are in the charter 3.2. He is one of the best limners of the 16th century. Decor of the gradual is described in the charter 4.2. Illuminations of gradual have conventional scheme choral manuscripts. A lot of analogies are found in the medieval manuscripts and also Renaissance manuscripts. There are elements of medieval literary paintwork, but also fully Renaissance elements: perfect linear perspective, high-quality scenery and brilliant anatomy. Zlutice gradual is one of the most beautiful and one of the costliest graduals of second half of the 16th century.

Oldtown's gradual (NK ČR, XVII.A.40), 1561-1567, from the manufactory of Jan Taborsky of Klokotska Hora

Oldtown's gradual The aim of this work is a monographic elaboration of the Oldtown's gradual (XVII.A.40), from 1561 to 1567, in the context of the work of Jan Taborsky of Klokotska Hora, with the emphasis on connotation of Žlutice gradual. The work elaborates and critically appraises the literature about the genesis and decor, deeply analyses its illuminations (through formal and iconographic analysis) and gives basic orientation in questions of analogies of its decor. Another goal of this work is a summarization of the decor of Oldtown's gradual and elaborated analysis of its illuminations. Oldtown's gradual is one of the best Renaissance manuscripts. The penman was Jan Taborsky of Klokotska Hora; chapter 2.1. deals with his life and production. Matous Ornys of Lindperk was the limner; chapter 2.2. deals with his work. Indisputably, he belongs to the best limners of the 16th century. The decor of the gradual is described in the chapter 4.2. Illuminations of gradual have conventional scheme of choral manuscripts. A lot of analogies are to be found in the medieval and also Renaissance manuscripts. Graduals from the Workshop of Jan Táborský of Klokotská Hora

The dissertation focuses on the decoration of 16th century choral manuscripts. The first part is devoted to the person of Jan Táborský of Klokotská Hora (1499-1572) who was a scribe and an owner of a scribe manufactory, and to the most significant illuminators of the the 16th century who contributed to the decoration of songbooks in the Lands of the Bohemian Crown. Attention is given not only to the illuminators to whom Jan Táborský of Klokotská Hora assigned the work and whose contribution can be inferred from the documents or stylistic analysis of their illuminations, but also to their contemporaries. Besides the frequently mentioned Fabián Puléř, we can assume that Jan Taborský also collaborated with Matouš Ornys of Lindperk, Matyáš Hutský of Křivoklát, Ambrož Ledecký and, presumably, others. In this context, one part of the thesis is focused on engravings by Martin Schongauer, Albrecht Dürer, Bernard Salomon and on the domestic prints by George Melantrich the Elder, as these engravings, mostly woodcuts, served as patterns and inspiration for almost every Bohemian illuminator. Themes found in this type of manuscript are mostly based on Biblical stories, corresponding to the feasts of the liturgical year.
