The Third Sector and Organised Civic Participation in the Czech Republic

This paper tries to answer the question, whether NGOs are an effective form of interest representation of citizens and social groups. In the first part it concentrates on definition of nongovernmental sector as an institutionalised part of civil society. Further the contribution delineates following roles of NGOs: participative, service, and interest role. It is particularly the interest function within which NGOs create space for representation of interests and needs. In the second part it analyses barriers on civic sector in the Czech Republic, we point out the following ones: communication between civil society and the state, unsatisfactory legal environment, financing in general as well as its structural changes following the Czech accession into the EU, inadequately developed corporate giving. Last but not least we stress individual barrier – post-communist citizen is rather organizationally passive and indifferent in his relationship to civic sector.
Analysis of low number of women in political decision-making functions

Project offers complex analysis of low proportion of women in political decision-making functions. Main focus points are: institutional framework of female participation, social and economic structures and conditions, political culture in political parties and in general. Aside from this analysis the project also presents sociological survey of public opinion towards involvement of women in politics and survey of Czech political scene on national as well as regional level in this regard. Special attention was paid to description of mechanisms of candidate selection within political parties, which in this context proofs to be the key element. Project also aimed at suggestion of possible solutions (e.g. adoption of parity law, intraparty quotas, and governmental campaign targeted towards the public, political mentoring etc.) and attitudes of public as well as politicians – both male and female towards these possible solutions.
The Third Sector and Civic Participation in the Czech Republic

The paper aims to make a complex analysis of how the third sector and civic participation function in the CR. It describes the types and structures of Czech NGOs, introduces a new typology of NGOs based on selected criteria, evaluates how the Czech third sector functions in the CEE context, and further elaborates on notions of participation among Czech citizens. The paper summarises the strengths and weaknesses of Czech NGOs and points to future opportunities and possible risks in this context.
Methods and Effectiveness of Interest Mediation Between Individuals, Social Groups and the State

The study addresses on the analysis of existing institutional structures of interest mediation between individuals, social groups and the society, analysis of existing forms of mediation and their effectiveness. The mediation process in explored from the point of view of spheres, in which it takes place, through which it is implemented, and its actors.
Agricultural Interest Representation in the Legislative Process of the Czech Parliament: Theoretical Approaches and Empirical Implications

The contribution aims at theoretical as well as general determination of the framework in which the process of articulation of interest with a stress on agricultural sector takes place. This framework is further applied on the analysis of empirical material. The main findings are following: in the Czech agrarian sector effective hierarchical structures of interest representation and horizontal and vertical intermediary channels within these structures are with few exceptions successfully consolidating. In accordance with the current trends in the world, the shift from social neo-corporativism to administrative lobbying takes place.
Public Opinion on Women in Politics

In a June survey CVVM looked at the topic of women in politics and surveyed whether respondents consider women's participation in public functions useful and whether they regard the current level of women's involvement in public life sufficient.
