Environmental behavior of companies.....
Machová, Daniela ; Polák, Miloš (advisor) ; Benešová, Libuše (referee)
This literature review summarizes a beginning and development of environmental activities and then an issue of environmental behavior of companies. It describes how companies can minimize eventual negative impacts of their work on environment using voluntary environmental activities and properly working environmental management. The next goal of the work is an assessment of one specific voluntary environmental activity, which is a project called "Green Company". This one is specialized in waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and batteries. Nevertheless projects like this one can raise an interest of employees for environment, enhance their awareness and also help company to gain international certification like ISO 14001. Key words: company, environmental behavior, electrical and electronic equipment, ISO, EMAS
Material Flows and Environmental Impacts of s-WEEE in the Czech Republic
Polák, Miloš ; Hák, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kočí, Vladimír (referee) ; Vladík, Jaroslav (referee)
This thesis is a comprehensive study describing and quantifying material flows of waste electric and electronic equipment (WEEE) in the Czech Republic; specifically the material flow of small waste electric and electronic equipment (s-WEEE) as well as representative substances. The studied material flows were estimated regarding aspects of the environmental impact. The End-of-Life mobile phone is seen as a typical representative of s-WEEE ; therefore material flows of mobile phones are described in this thesis as well. To put it in concrete figures, approximately 124 thousand tons of WEEE from households originated in the Czech Republic in 2010, where each inhabitant got rid off 4 pieces of WEEE in average. Further, total production calculating also consumer-like WEEE from companies and institutions was around 141 thousand tons in 2010. S-WEEE present around 15% from the total amount of WEEE originating in 2010; however it is more than 80% as regards the number of pieces. Despite of that fact the recycling potential of Au for instance is slightly higher by s-WEEE than by large WEEE (63kg/year compared to the 59kg/year respectively). As regards estimation of the total production of EoL mobile phones, around 45 thousand pieces originated in the Czech Republic between the years 1990-2000 and 6,5...

Extended Producer Responsibility: Potential and Limits. An Analysis of EPR in Theory and Practice
King, James ; Kozák, Kryštof (advisor) ; Polák, Miloš (referee)
Waste management is becoming a hot topic in policy circles. Municipal governments, which are largely responsible for building and maintaining waste disposal networks, are keen to find ways of minimising the cost of disposing of waste and the sheer amount of waste society produces. Unfortunately, market and corporatist approaches do not take waste management into consideration, rather leaving waste management to local authorities, and without government coercion will usually not concern themselves with environmentally-friendly product design, waste minimisation or the reuse, re- manufacturing or recycling of the product at the end of its life cycle. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) provides a framework for involving the producers of goods in the full life cycle of their products, particularly the end of it. As the name suggests, it is about the extension of responsibility for waste management to the producer, which is in effect an internalisation of the costs of waste management and disposal to the production level. This thesis undertakes a theoretical analysis of Extended Producer Responsibility and subsequently performs a comparison of two case studies to ascertain the viability of the program in practice. The first case study concerns the Dutch Packaging Covenants of 1991-2005, which...

Possibilities of recycling mobile phones.
Slováková, Jana ; Benešová, Libuše (advisor) ; Polák, Miloš (referee)
Mobile phones are the most used electronic equipment on the globe. Their recycling rate is low because the collection system of end-of-life mobile phones is ineffective. This thesis remains mobile phones collection systems, their composition and content of usable components. The next section describes dealing with mobile phones in the Czech Republic, and the practical part describes the results of research conducted under the ASEKOL, s.r.o. The total weight of the samples was 20 830.27 kg. Total weight in group 3, where mobile phones are, was 13 740.79 kg (5 730 pieces). In comparison with year 2009 the group 3 increased by 155.14 kg, while there was a decline in the number of items in the group - there were from 6,092 pieces to 5,730 pieces.
