Domestic political debates on German security policy under Angela Merkel in 2005-2017
Peremský, Vojtěch ; Emler, David (advisor) ; Nigrin, Tomáš (referee)
The thesis examines the internal political debates on Germany's security policy under Angela Merkel from 2005-2017. The main focus is on the political parties of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD). In particular, the thesis focuses on the approach of the CDU/CSU and the SPD towards Russia. The parties have ruled together for several terms, have they been able to agree on all security policy issues? How has the internal political debate in Germany changed regarding Russia after its annexation of Crimea in 2014? On the international stage, it was possible to observe that Germany joined the economic sanctions against Russia and condemned its aggression in Ukraine. But has the change in Germany's attitude towards Russia had a significant impact on the domestic political debate? The theoretical approach adopted was the theory of ontological security, which examines how states approach their security. A qualitative content analysis was used for the research.
