PhDr. Kateřina Průšová Book as a Jewel, Francoflemish Books of Hours from the National Library in Prague Abstract The purpose of this dissertation is to present the first comprehensive catalogue of Franco-Flemish books of hours from the collections of the National Library in Prague (hereafter, NK). Some of the included manuscripts were already published in journals some of them have never been published previously. The core of the catalogue is a formal and stylistic analysis of books of hours, including an attribution to the individual masters and workshops, localization and dating based on a comparison of stylistically related manuscripts. This work is a development from previous my research done on Parisian books of hours [NK Břevnov 297, NK Osek 70 and NK XXIII G 89; Master's thesis and 'rigorous work']. Six books of hours come from the National Library in Prague [NK XXIII H 22, NK Břevnov 296, NK XXIII F 198, NK XXIII G88, NK Osek 65, NK VI D 25] and one manuscript in the collection of the Lobkowicz family at Nelahozeves castle, previously deposited in the Prague National Library [with a shelf- mark VI Fg 67]. The catalogue covers the period of the greatest flowering of Flemish book illumination from the first half of the 15th century to the beginning of the 16th century. The books of hours from the...
The cosmological conception of the Old Testament and its representation in the Anglo-Saxon art
Panušková, Lenka ; Konečný, Lubomír (advisor) ; Hlaváčková, Jana Hana (referee) ; Studničková, Milada (referee)
The rendering thesis analyses the topic of the Creator of the world with compasses in his hands generally known in the art historian literature. The common known example of this iconography is presented in the frontispice of older of two bible moralisées in Vienna, on which the Logos-Creator is shaping the four elements within the earthcircle by the compasses. The illustration is to be interpreted according to the old French inscription in the top strip of the square frame of the scene: ICI CRIE DEX CIEL ET TERRE SOLEIL ET LVNE ET TOZ ELEMENZ. In line with this scene all the illuminations presenting God with a pair of compasses are commonly held for a depiction of Creator mundi as Architectus or deus geometra. That is why the aim of this work is to show the incorrectness of such identification above all in case of the Anglo-Saxon manuscripts. In these the analysed motif is simultaneously performed in both its meanings - the protological one as Creator mundi and also the eschatological one as the fair Judge. On the grounds by this bipolarity it is necessary to emphasize need of the distinction of the first group of authentic Anglo-Saxon view of the motif and its later appearance on the continent reduced by the essential weakening of the eschatological aspect in the favour of the protological one. The...
The function of the author in the Middle Ages, as demonstrated by the iconography of Guillaume de Machaut’s manuscripts
Panušková, Lenka
This paper addresses the depicting of the poet and author Guillaume de Machaut. Several of Machaut’s compositions or “dits” reflect the principles of poetry, and in this context they also reflect his status as an author or authority. During his lifetime two manuscripts were created, MS fr. 1586 (c. 1350) and MS fr. 1584 (c. 1370), which scholars believe may have been produced under Machaut’s direct supervision. Several other manuscripts dating form after Machaut’s death have also been preserved, of which MS fr. 9221 and MSS fr. 22545-22546 in particular are also the subject of this study. Illuminations featuring Machaut in the role of author can be divided into three groups (poet-scribe, university iconography, inspired poet), each of which emphasises a different aspect of writing and presenting poetry. However, it seems that despite attempts by some scholars to see Machaut’s direct influence in the illuminations, the individual masters were working with contemporary iconography.

The king as a writer: The image of Anglo-Saxon rulers in the perspective of contemporary artists and society
Kantorová, Aneta ; Panušková, Lenka (advisor) ; Čermák, Jan (referee)
The present thesis focuses on the importance of the written word as a ruling device of the Anglo- Saxon kings. Due to the availability of historical evidence, the studied period begins in 597 with the arrival of Christian missionaries from Rome and ends prior to the Norman Conquest in 1066. The kings' approach to the written word is analyzed on the basis of surviving literary and iconographic evidence, i.e. on documents composed for or by the rulers, and on the visual images of the rulers as portrayed in surviving manuscripts. The first chapter provides a historical background necessary for the correct interpretation of the examined texts and portraits. This section is aimed at the main concepts discussed in the thesis: medieval authorship, medieval kingship, and the spread of Christianity within the Anglo- Saxon kingdoms. The second chapter offers the analysis of written documents and focuses on the texts composed within the scope of King Alfred's educational and religious reform. The close reading of the OE translations demonstrates the king's use of the texts as didactic tools mainly serving to promote religion and learning within the kingdom. The key texts are Gregory's Pastoral Care, Augustine's Soliloquies, and Boethius's Consolation of Philosophy; an additional context of the king's life and...
