The thesis deals with an annotated translation from German into Czech. Specifically, it concerns four selected chapters from the book Unsere Alpen. Ein einzigartiges Paradies und wie wir es erhalten können by Felix Neureuther et al. This is a hypothetical commission and an expert commentary on the translation. The commentary consists of a translation analysis of the original, source text according to Christiane Nord, a description of the translation method and a description of the translation problems and shifts that occurred during the translation. The aim of the bachelor thesis is to produce a functional translation and a theoretical commentary on translation strategies and the translation process. Georganne Weller Ford and her Contribution to the Development of Interpreting Studies

This master's thesis provides an overview of the work and contribution of the contemporary Mexican interpreter, researcher and teacher Georganne Weller Ford. It focuses on the prominent areas of her work, namely legal interpreting, and indigenous language interpreting. It also includes a short biography of Georganne Weller Ford, presents her research on different aspects of simultaneous interpreting, and reports on her teaching and interpreting projects. This is a theoretical descriptive study, similar to other student works dedicated to important figures on the international translation studies scene.

Development and current situation of interpreting in Mexico between Czech and Spanish

The aim of the present work is to investigate the development and current state of interpreting and, marginally, translation in the Czech-Spanish and Spanish-Czech language combination in Mexico. The introductory part of the thesis will present the development of translation and interpreting in the given language combination in Mexico, while the methodological part, based on semi-structured interviews of interpreters and translators not only under the auspices of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Mexico will shed light on the current situation, which the student will present as a whole and coherently in the final part of the thesis and, based on the information thus gathered, will try to find answers to questions that remain unanswered, often not even raised. This bachelor thesis consists of the translation of a German written text alongside a commentary of this translation. The translated text is a scientific article from sinologist Mareile Flitsch, called "Vor dem »Auge der Schwiegermutter« Zur materiellen Alltagskultur der Frauen im ländlichen Nord- und Nordost-China", from the book "Frauenleben im traditionellen China: Grenzen und Möglichkeiten einer Rekonstruktion". The article deals with the material culture of everyday women's life in the countryside of China and its possibility of reconstruction. A large part of the text is devoted to the "kang" phenomenon. So called "kang" is a platform of brick, clay or concrete built across one side or end of a room in a house in northern China, warmed by a fire beneath, and used for sleeping and daily household chores. The commentary is comprised of two parts. The first part is the translation analysis of the text, which is in turn based on Christine Nord's analysis. The Czech Fiction in the Spanish Books Market

The thesis aimes is to describe the panorama of contemporary translation from Czech fiction in Spain based on interviews with prominent translators of the last twenty years. The thesis tries to answer the questions of what the criteria for the selection of translated titles are (are classics or contemporary authors translated more? And why is this the case?), what does the current Spanish book market look like, how does the translation support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic work what are the possibilities of scholarships, how does the cooperation between translators and institutions offering support work. This is an empirical work, the essential part of which consists of interviews conducted with selected translators and representatives of institutions that support translation from Czech literature. The thesis provides a brief introduction to the history of translation from Spanish into Czech and vice versa, charts the change in conditions after 1989 and focuses in particular on new translation currents after 2000. It also discusses publishing practices in Spain, literary prizes and the functioning of literary fairs and agencies. Interpreting in Spain: a Historical and Educational Perspective using Conference Interpreting as an Example

This diploma thesis is of theoretical-descriptive nature and its main aim is to describe the historical development of conference interpreting in Spain, as well as its current situation in the country. The main focus is on interpreting for the European institutions and on education of conference interpreters in the country. After brief introduction into conference interpreting from a global point of view, we focus on the origins of conference interpreting in Spain - interpreting for the United Nations, the first professional associations of conference interpreters and the first university centres that offered courses in conference interpreting. Follows the topic of current options of training in conference interpreting, as well as an analysis of courses at member universities at the EMCI (European Masters in Conference Interpreting) consortium, which are subsequently compared with the Institute of Translation studies in Prague and its EMCI specialization module. The history of interpreting for the European institutions, as well as the history of Spain and Spanish in the European Union is also described and the current situation in the Spanish booth of the European Commission is characterized, taking into consideration the ongoing Spanish presidency in the Council of the EU. Czech-German interpreting in the Habsburg monarchy between 1740 and 1918

The subject of this thesis is interpreting in the Habsburg Monarchy between 1740 and 1918. The aim is to analyse the communicative situations in which interpreting may have taken place in the space and time being studied. The whole issue will be tackled from the perspective of the language pair in question, that is Czech and German. This thesis consists of three parts. In the first part, we will introduce the context of the Habsburg Monarchy, focus on the definition of interpreting as an activity and as a profession, and then define the various factors that affect the presence of interpreting in the given context. In the second part, we will apply these factors to the reality of the Habsburg Monarchy and to individual communicative situations. The output of the second part will determine in which areas interpreting between Czech and German occurred and whether we can consider it to be a profession or not. In the final part of this thesis, we will focus on one area in which interpretating between Czech and German occurred most frequently in the given period and present it in greater detail.

Training of professional interpreters in the Czech Republic

This master's thesis deals with the education of professional interpreters in the Czech Republic, their association in Czech professional organizations and their further self-development. It focuses on the further (self-)education of interpreters after their interpreting studies. It explores how interpreters maintain their linguistic knowledge and interpreting competences and how they continue their education in business skills, which are often necessary for the interpreting profession. It provides a more comprehensive overview of electronic resources and speech databases that can be used to train interpreting and language skills; events, lectures, courses, and professional groups that can be attended. It also gives an overview of blogs and podcasts that can be used to improve not only interpreting but also business skills, regardless of language combination. The empirical part includes an evaluation of a questionnaire survey of Czech professional interpreters, focusing on whether they are members of Czech professional organizations, how they maintain their interpreting skills and language proficiency, and to what extent they are educated in other (business) areas related to interpreting work. New technologies in interpreting and the future developments in the interpreting profession

This master's thesis deals with new technologies in interpreting. It aims to describe technologies that are breaking through (or will be in the near future) to help predict how the interpreting profession will change. The thesis focuses on remote interpreting, computer assisted interpreting, and machine interpreting. The theoretical part describes the state of those various technologies and how they work. The empirical part consists of two parts: interviews and questionnaires. The goal of the interviews is to find out how the technologies in question are approached by not only professional interpreters but also experts and researchers who take part in developing them. The questionnaires survey the attitude of interpreters on the Czech market towards these technologies. The research showed that interpreters see technology mostly as a new possibility; however, for many, it still poses a threat. Despite the fast technological development, everything suggests that technology will not replace professional interpreters in the near future.
