Sex for Sale: Globalization and Human Trafficking
Aiello, Annmarie ; Levrincová, Petra (advisor) ; Hrishabh, Sandilya (referee)
The practice of trafficking has many different facets; drug trafficking, arms trafficking and human trafficking complete the top three illegal trafficking practices today. Human trafficking may be the third highest illegal trafficking practice, however there is inadequate mainstream information on the affects of the trade and horrifying issues that incorporate trafficking in human beings. This paper will discuss how the globalized world has been enabling trafficking in human beings with a concentration on South Eastern Europe. In the future this hopefully will not be a pressing issue that needs to researched and discussed but until then raising awareness and education is the best solution in combating human trafficking. In today's time trafficking of women for sexual exploitation is rapidly growing in South Eastern Europe and is known to be in the fourth wave.160 Trafficking affects almost every country in the world and is significantly higher during different periods of history. Since South Eastern Europe is currently a breading, transportation and in some cases a destination country, it is an integral region dealing with human trafficking, which must be examined. Unlike the other waves of human trafficking, the fourth wave has an added trigger and enabler of globalization. Studying how Globalization is...
Constructive Engagement or Illegal Investment?
Levely, Ian ; Levrincová, Petra (advisor) ; Riegl, Martin (referee)
This thesis examines the role of transnational corporations in preventing human rights abuse and conflict, along with the limits to proactive strategies and engagement with host governments. It concludes by applying these principles in a case study: the oil and gas industry in Burma. The issue is approached both practically and theoretically from economic, legal and political approaches. In some cases it is possible for companies to avoid or mitigate risks by adopting proactive strategies that might included training and community development programs. A firm that recognizes these issues and adopts a socially responsible strategy may justify their presence in a given country based on the overall effect it has, despite some negative consequences, such as financing a corrupt regime. Furthermore, it can be assumed in many cases that a firm that withdraws will quickly be replaced by another firm, which may be less sensitive to these concerns. Based on these grounds, a company might argue that their presence in a country where the government does not respect human rights represents constructive engagement with the host country's regime. While this line of reasoning is certainly valid, and while this strategy is feasible in some cases, there are certain boundaries that firms should not cross. Firstly, any...

Instruments of Protection of Human Rights in the European Union - Perspective for a Common EU Policy?
Hendrychová, Veronika ; Levrincová, Petra (advisor) ; Ruffer-Lustigová, Petra (referee)
The diploma thesis "Instruments of protection of human rights in the European union - Perspective for a common EU policy?" stems from the assumption that the European Union increasingly accentuates the human rights protection, both inside and outside the Community. The main hypothesis is that this process is leading to the creation of a common human rights policy in the EU. The guiding line of the thesis is whether it is possible to find sufficient indicia pointing to a foreseeable creation of such a policy, e.g. will from the side of institutions and other actors. The first part of the thesis examines the definition of human rights in the EU, levels of their protection and human rights provisions of the founding treaties, their revisions and other relevant documents. The second part focuses on the main actors in the system of human rights protection in the EU and evaluation of their activities in this field. The perspective of the common human rights policy is a topic of the third part. It focuses mainly on the analysis of the current state of the human rights protection in the European Union and the will of actors to proceed together in this area. The thesis is predominantly conducted with the empirical-analytical method; further legal analysis and qualitative textual analysis are used. The main...

Internally Displaced Persons in International Law and Policy - A Case Study Approach on the Darfur Crisis in Sudan
Moog, Sarah Alea ; Levrincová, Petra (advisor) ; Haišmanová, Lucie (referee)
More than 27 million people have been forced to leave their homes and have sought refuge in another part of their home country. Since they have not crossed an internationally recognized state border, they do not enjoy the same protection as refugees. The Westphalian principle of state sovereignty does not allow the international community to get involved and protect IDPs, as long as this intervention is not explicitly requested by the government. This paper defines internal displacement, shows its causes, and explores mechanisms to cope with the difficult situation of the internally displaced. A case study on the conflict in Darfur puts these issues into the real context of a complex humanitarian situation. The conflict in Darfur is an ethnic clash between the Arab supremacists in the Sudanese capital Khartoum and the African population in Darfur, which has existed since the 1980s and reached its climax in the past decade. The conflict has been the cause of one of the severest displacement tragedies considering the fact that the largest part of Sudan's more than five million IDPs are displaced in Darfur. The government has shown little interest in cooperating with the international community to assist civilians in Darfur, but is, on the contrary, generally suspected to be involved in the...
