International migration and the gender
Koropecká, Markéta ; Janská, Eva (advisor) ; Schovánková, Soňa (referee)
My bachelor thesis explores the connection between international migration and gender. Gender, defined as a social, not a biological term, has a huge impact on the migration process. Statistics and expert studies that have been gender sensitive since 1970s demonstrate that women form half of the amount of the international migrants depending on the world region and representing a wide range of the kinds of international migration: family formation and reunification, labour migration, illegal and forced migration. Women and children represent the most threatened group of migrants; in various phases of their migration they often face discrimination, and emotional and physical abuse. To give a solution to these problems it is necessary for the STUDIES to pay more attention to the specific needs of both genders and the problems they both have to face. It is then possible to adjust the politics of migration and the activity of various non-governmental organizations which deal with the migrants more efficiently. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the studies of the connection between migration and gender further, and fill in gaps in gender sensitive studies. Key words: gender, gender-sensitive research, women, international migrantion
Sociological interpretation of hippies movement
Koropecká, Markéta ; Duffková, Jana (advisor) ; Sládek, Jan (referee)
My bachelor thesis explores the hippie movement, which emerged in the middle of the sixties in the United States of America. The theoretical framework consists of sociological concepts of culture, subculture, youth and youth subcultures, communities, communes and social movements. The hippie movement was young people's response to middle class consumerism, which preferred material prosperity to moral and cultural values. The American transcendentalist movement and the Beat Generation can be considered its intellectual precursor. The movement's main characteristic was rejection of middle class values. Therefore, some authors have called it a counterculture. Hippies gave up studies and tangible assets. Typical for them was lack of confidence in the future, interest in oriental philosophy and religion, close relationship to nature, specific clothing style, living in communes and the use of drugs, especially LSD. The movement dissipated at the end of the sixties. Its influence is still evident in the effort to fight for human rights, peace, free network, but also in music and clothing. Some of the hippie movement's ideas are the source of today's youth subcultures and movements. Key words: social movement, youth, community, hippies, LSD
Acculturation of the immigrant women the case of women immigrants from Ukraine and Arab countries
Koropecká, Markéta
This thesis examines the acculturation process of women immigrant to Czech cultural environment. Acculturation can be defined as adaptation to cultural environment other than the individual was born in. Just like the other phases of international migration, this process is gendered, i.e. influenced by roles, norms and patterns of behavior assigned to women and men by society. Experts have shown that women experience acculturation differently than men. Due to their reproductive role they are considered to be carriers and protectors of immigrant groups' cultural identity and are expected to transmit cultural values to the future generations. The acculturation process' assessment was based on theory of stress and coping. For qualitative research, two groups of immigrant women, from Ukraine and Arab countries, were selected. The main objective of this work was to determine whether the respondents from these countries were experiencing acculturative stress during their adaptation to new cultural environments, how they coped with this stress and also what influenced their acculturation in Czech environment. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the respondents and were evaluated using qualitative content analysis. Keywords: acculturation, culture, gender, Ukrainian women, women from Arab countries
