Adaptation of a beginning teacher for work with gifted pupils at first level of primary school

The MSc. thesis focuses on the conditions for beginning teachers and their adaptation on start of their carreer at the first level of primary schools in the Czech Republic, and further ontheir success or problems in working with gifted pupils. The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical parts (the latter consisting of primary and secondary research). The theoretical part consists of three chapters. The first chapter describes some of the specifics of the teaching profession and the situation of new teachers shortly after taking up the job. The second chapter is devoted to the adaptation process, gives an overview of the conditions for new teachers and programmes to support them in the current Czech education system, the legislation in this area, and a brief comparison with the situation abroad. This is followed by a chapter devoted to a theoretical introduction to the issue of exceptionally gifted pupils, their identification and work with them. The primary research (questionnaire survey) seeks to identify attitudes to the issues directly from novice teachers (up to two or five years of experience) and their more experienced colleagues. Gifted children at the first level of elementary school and their social skills

This bachelor thesis focuses on gifted children at the first level of elementary school, with a spe- cific focus on the children's social and emotional skills. The aim of the thesis is to explore the mul- tiple factors that influence the development of social skills in gifted children, as well as to identify educational processes that could help gifted children to develop these skills. In the first part of the thesis, I discuss the concepts of giftedness and gifted child and introduce main theories of gif- tedness. I also discuss the historical developments of the giftedness research. Next, I explore the question how to help gifted children to develop their social and emotional skill as well as how to improve their integration into peer groups. I examine specific policies aimed at helping gifted chil- dren and their effectiveness. As a conclusion, I summarize main findings and discuss implications for the current Czech educational system.

The thesis deals with the concepts of talent and gifted child and introduces main giftedness theories. It also informs about historical approaches to giftedness since ancient Greece to these days. Subsequently, the question of how to help gifted children to develop social and emotional skills and to integrate them into the class group is addressed. Attention is focused on support measures that already exist in this area and their effectiveness. In conclusion, there is a summary of what can be deduced from the acquired information and what approach uses contemporary Czech education system to gifted children.
