Hošková, Mlada ; Royt, Jan (advisor) ; Jančárková, Julie (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with four chosen sacred sights built during the 12th centu- ry in Sicily, focusing on their interior design. The Cathedral of Cefalù, the Palatine Chapel, the Church of Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio in Palermo and the Cathedral in Monreale display a combination of Byzantine art and Islamic art. First chapters of this thesis are dedicated to such cultural traditions. Following chapters present the specific sights with an emphasis on mosaics and unique expressions of Islamic panting. Having the goal of distinguishing the work of Byzantine works on mosaics from that of Sicilian works, a deeper knowledge of each mosaic set is conducted in this paper with the help of analysis and comparison. As such, an image of the character of the distinctive art of early Kingdom of Sicily is created. Keywords Byznatine art - Islamic art - mosaic - Palermo - Roger II. - Sicily - William I. - William II.
