This thesis deals with the space and the characters from the novel La Casa Verde by the Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa. The thesis briefly describes the author's literary work and that the novel was inspired by his own life. First, the work focuses on the Amazonian rainforest called Santa María de Nieva and then on the urban space Piura in Peru. A brothel called Green House is introduced as the title of the novel is based on the name of this house. The main subject of the thesis is the analysis of the traditional Latin American topic of the mutual relation between civilization-barbarism. This topic is observed through space and characters, which are developing simultaneously, therefore these two levels (space and characters) cannot be separated. Both attributes (civilization-barbarism) manifest themselves depending on the space where the characters are situated. The purpose of the thesis is to demonstrate the inferior status of Peruvian women, which is achieved via the novel's female characters, and also to depict the Latin American reality of the 20th century. Keywords: Peru, Piura, boom, Peruvian literature, fiction, reality, prostitution, machismo, violence, Indianism
