Crime and Punishment in Television News
Háková, Lucie ; Hájek, Martin (advisor)
The thesis deals with the media representation of crime and crime news as a specific image of reality. The aim of the thesis was to analyse the role of the media in the process of defining crime as one of the risks in contemporary risk society and the part of the media portrayal of crime which plays in the process of legitimising appropriate ways to manage these risks. The study attempted to clarify the way in which the topic of crime as an agenda of the news media operates, how criminal risk is constructed through the media in contemporary society, and how it is understood by the public. The media construction of crime risk was examined in three different ways. A quantitative content analysis of television crime news focused on describing the characteristics of crime news in general and the specific differences between public television and commercial television news. By analysing the media representation of crime types, specific crimes, crime news actors and punishments, the differences in the media construction of crime risk between the two types of news coverage were highlighted. A qualitative content analysis of the media representation of probation, using a specific example, showed how the topic of probation is reflected in the Czech media space and focused on how to thematise crime risk in...

Those were chosen for different characteristics, for the sample to be miscellaneous. In the transition period, the bachelor thesis focuses on the manifestations of liminality in particular. Those are for example the ambiguity of the individual, the anti-structure, the revaluation, rethinking one's self and the society and the experimenting with the new possibilities, which come to light in this phase of transition. The entry to the new social structure is also dealt with in this thesis. The involvement within the new structure is viewed by the concept of resocialization and the construction of identity. Prudnikova, Elizaveta ; Numerato, Dino (advisor) ; Háková, Lucie (referee)
This thesis deals with gender inequalities in media presentation of Czech athletes during Winter Olympic Games 2014 in Sochi. The rationale for conducting research on this topic is the International Olympic Committee's statement that the Olympics in Pyeongchang 2018 were more gender-balanced than before. The paper focuses on the media image of Czech Olympic team that was made by website iSport for the period from 7. 2. 2014 to 23. 2. 2014. The work stems from the assumption of feminist theory that a male athlete plays a dominant role in sports, which can be a source of gender inequalities during big international sports events. Such expressions of gender inequalities are mainly sex sports typing, gender labeling, and the specific addressing, especially of sportswomen. The introductory section describes dynamics of the sport and media relationships and a subsequent connection with the gender. The qualitative content analysis summarizes main theme topics of information notes about Olympic events. Results culminate in a discussion about differences in the representation of Czech sportsmen and sportswomen, which are based mainly on the emphasis on the family relations of women. After that, I outline the possible continuation of the research in order to reveal the influential conditions for the...
