The value of the skeleton in reconstruction of activity on the example of archery
Véle, Dominik ; Sládek, Vladimír (advisor) ; Fikar, Vojtěch (referee)
Skeletal remains of anatomically modern humans could be a source of informations about movement activities carried out during life. Archery was an important activity for our ancestors and it is an activity that can leave a trace on the skeleton. So far, no research asked the question whether traces left on skeletal remnants correspond to some general pattern related to archery. Enthesopathies and long bone shafts are the subject of this thesis because these methods are used in the reconstruction of archery. Reviewed literature suggests that long bone shafts are useful in the activity reconstruction. Enthesopathies are useful as well but it is important to consider some specific properties of enthesopaties when using them. Information gained from the enthesopathies and long bone shafts should be explained in a historical context. For this reason, this thesis provides context by adding a general chapter related to bow in general and to hunting activities with a bow. Reviewed literature suggests that it is indeed possible to find a general pattern of a skeletal traces for archery with long bone shafts but probably not with enthesopathies.
Osteobiography of Early Medieval Warrior from Pohansko
Fikar, Vojtěch ; Sládek, Vladimír (advisor) ; Brůžek, Jaroslav (referee)
The aim of this thesis was to construct an osteobiografical profile of two individuals from the early medieval locality of Kostice-Zadní hrúd, identified, on the basis of grave inventory, as warriors. In order to obtain a clear picture of early medieval warriors and to provide a basis for comparison, we also tried to find out what characterised an average early medieval Great Moravian warrior. Individuals from the early medieval locality Pohansko-Břeclav were chosen as comparative samples of regular population and warriors. The following methods were used to construct an osteobiographical profile: tracking of entheseal changes of muscle attachments, analyses of cross-sectional geometry of long bones and a Fourier analysis of acetabular morphology. We found out that warriors from Pohansko-Břeclav were horse riders trained in close combat, they did not wear heavy armour and did not train with bow. Due to bad preservation, only one of the individuals subject to our study, the individual labelled KZH H003, could be analysed. The man was short in stature, he did not perform hard manual work, but he trained with sword and bow and rode a horse. Klíčová slova: Acetabulum, Warriors, CSG, entheseal changes, Fourierova analysis, early medieval, osteobiography
