Tick-borne meningoencephalitis in east Bohemia.

The aim of this diploma thesis was a detailed study of a tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) occurence in Eastern Bohemia during years 2003 - 2006. The group of 3100 patients was examined by the use of ELISA technique for IgM and IgG antibodies against the tick-borne encephalitis virus. All the tests were performed in the laboratories of the Virological Department of the Institute of Clinical Microbiology in the University Hospital at Hradec Králové. According to the resulting diagnosis the patients were divided into several groups which were subsequently further characterized on the basis of the age structure and men/women ratio. Moreover, the geographical profile and the primary diagnosis were closely investigated for the studied group of patients. The main part of this work is formed by an extended look at the development of the number of positive cases of the tick-borne encephalitis infection in eastern bohemia during 2003 - 2006. It was found that the increasing trend in the TBE development is similar for Eastern Bohemia and the entire Czech Republic. Furthermore, it was confirmed that this increase is truly a distinct deviation (and not only a casual fluctuation) from the the previous 15-year course.
