The aim of this thesis is to analyse selected autobiographical works written by Indian trans* authors, namely A. Revathi: The Truth about Me: A Hijra Life Story, Laxmi Narayan Tripathi: Me Hijra, Me Laxmi and Living Smile Vidya: I am Vidya: A Transgender's Journey. The first part of the thesis will provide a broader perspective on trans* identity issues, including an introduction to the terminology and history. This will be followed by a section relating it to the context of the Indian subcontinent, within which the phenomenon of the hijra as a specific trans* community of the region will be largely addressed. Prague and Women in Paul Leppin's Novel "Severin's Journey into the Dark"
Czielová, Simona ; Hadwiger, Julia Nina Vanessa (advisor) ; Tvrdík, Milan (referee)
(in English) This thesis deals with the way female characters are portrayed in Paul Leppin's Novel Severin's Journey into the Dark (Severins Gang in die Finsternis, 1914). After the author and his work are shortly introduced, the female characters of the novel are being analysed. Their qualities and their roles and positions in society as well as their relationship to the main male character are being compared to the period scientific papers (mostly psychological and psychiatric works). These influenced the whole society at the beginning of the 20th century and thereby helped to determinate the trends in literature. A part of the thesis also deals with an anthropomorphised picture of Prague. The analysis of the novel should give an answer to the question how much individuality female characters posses and how much the social and psychological premises of turn of the century influenced them.
Feminity in the Work of Paul Leppin
Czielová, Simona ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (advisor) ; Schneider, Thomas (referee)
This thesis deals with female characters, concepts of feminity and gender aspects of the image of society and culture in the work of the leading representative of Prague German bohemians Paul Leppin. The subject of the analysis is both the prose work of the author (novels Daniel Jesus, 1905, Severins Gang in Die Finsternis, 1914 and Hüter der Freude, 1918) and selected essays (Venus auf Abwegen, 1920). On one hand, the analyses offer contextualization of intra-textual images of women and femininity in contemporary discourse; on the other hand, they are subjected to the relevant concepts of gender studies as described in the introduction of the thesis (especially Judith Fetterley).
