Philosophy of History: Jared Diamond and the Philosophy of History
BAŽANTOVÁ, Eva
The philosophy of history seems to be dead in its classical point of view according to the experience from the 20th century. When we want to think of Jared Diamond as a philosopher of history, we have to start right at G. W. F. Hegel, who is considered to be the key personality of the traditional philosophy of history. Hegel?s opinions are about to be revealed to understand what is the ?traditional? philosophy of history about. All three philosophers ? Diamond, Fukuyama and Hegel ? work with the topic of the evolution of the human kind and the society as a whole. They try to find out the rules of the development of the mankind. However, one of them is not considered to be a philosopher. Jared Diamond is a scientist, who deals with biology, genetics. His major work is about the behaviour of birds. I will reveal that there are facts, which prove Jared Diamond may be considered as a philosopher of history. We have to discuss and think of the theories of the philosophers of history. Some of them may be developed to become more precise. A revelation of the new ways how to work with the philosophy of history must be done. It could help us to claim whether the philosophy of history is dead, which is the supposition. The philosophy of history could be saved ? it would have to use the approach of science. This approach is used by Jared Diamond, who was inspired by Edward O. Wilson and his Sociobiology and others.
