Starec, Petr ; Procházka, Rudolf (advisor) ; Podliska, Jaroslav (referee) ; Štefan, Ivo (referee)
Petr Starec: Archaeology of Wenceslas Square in Prague This PhD thesis is a part of archaeology of public space in medieval and early modern cities. Based on the findings of long-term archaeological research of Wenceslas Square it presents an analysis of the results of research in the square and interprets the image of Wenceslas Square in its transformation from the Middle Ages to modern times. At the same time, it presents information about the geomorphology of the selected area, water conditions, older settlement forms and the communication needs of this public space. The knowledge gained also provides a probe into the everyday life of the town's inhabitants. Systematic archaeological research on Wenceslas Square is mostly associated with the construction of the subway in the central part of the square in 1967-1968. Later another great construction intervention in Wenceslas Square occurred at its lower end with the construction of the subway and Můstek metro line A station. Construction circumstances allowed archaeologists to obtain only partial information regarding issue of the Old Town medieval fortifications. Under the new circumstances after 1989 with further construction activities at the square it was possible to perform open archaeological preservation using interdisciplinary scientific...
Castles and their settlement context in the region of Benešov in the Late Medieval Period
Drášilová, Luisa ; Klír, Tomáš (advisor) ; Štefan, Ivo (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with castles in the Benešov region in the late MiddleAge. The primary goal was to create a more comprehensive picture of all the castles in use at the time and their location in the landscape. This created an image of the settlement in their direct surroundings. A separate chapter was dedicated to the more general history of settlement in the Benešov region. The whole territory was compared with other areas, and separately with the Doolin region in western Ireland, whose medieval settlement situation I also briefly described. Subsequently, the current condition of the selected castles was evaluated. An important goal of this work was also the application of the results in the form of a presentation of lesser-known archaeological sites to the public. A separate section at the end of the thesis was devoted to this goal.
Romanesque sacral architecture of Prague and surroundings in artistic-historical and archeological written sources
Chudobová, Žofie ; Štefan, Ivo (advisor) ; Dragoun, Zdeněk (referee)
(in English): Romanesque sacral architecture is one of the important monuments helping us understand many aspects of early medieval society. Prague and its surroundings belong to the regions with a valuable and numerous constructions. The basic prerequisite for the evaluation of the theme will be the current catalogue, which will evaluate the art-historical, construction- technical aspects and the settlement context of individual buildings. Great emphasis will be put on churches included in the archaeological research. Nevertheless, the results of studies in other fields (especially history) will be implemented into the records, as well. Naturally, burying, which accompanied most of the buildings, is also a part of the records. The result of the work will be a comprehensive evaluation of this category of monuments and their historical context.

Transformations of the centre in the hinterland of medieval Prague: the stronghold in Praha-Vinoř
Kapic, Matyáš ; Štefan, Ivo (advisor) ; Varadzin, Ladislav (referee)
(in English) he presented work is a summary of the results of systematic research of the Praha-Vinoř hillfort carried out for last several years under the direction of the Institute of Archaeology of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University. The location can be seen as unique testimony to the transformation of the centre in the hinterland of Prague. Its significance and function have changed substantially in the past. The oldest identified early medieval component is represented by the relics of a hall-like structure of great dimensions and an elite burial of a young girl located in its interior. The second important horizon of past activities is a creation of a large scale early medieval cemetery in the area surrounding this (perhaps still standing) building. According to well-known analogies and other numerous indications, it can be assumed that there was also a church, but the only excavated situation that allows us to consider this interpretation are the relics of a stone structure discovered on the southern edge of the necropolis. Already at the time of the burial ground the hillfort was gradually losing its importance and in the end its function was probably reduced to just a centre of a local church administration. In the period of the High Middle Ages and the early modern period this...

Halašková, Stanislava ; Sláma, Jiří (advisor) ; Štefan, Ivo (referee)
The topic of the bachelor thesis is Grave gifts and personal equipment of the dead in the early medieval burials and the fade away of this custom. The thesis is divided into three parts. First of them is dedicated to the analysis of selected early medieval burial grounds and closer acquainting with singular items of grave's equipment. In the second chapter are these items closely characterized and dated. I have tried in the last chapter to follow the causes of the phenomenon of fading away of the grave's equipment in early medieval burial grounds. The goal of the thesis is to follow the changes in the frequency of occurrence of the items placed into graves on Czech early medieval burial grounds, focusing on singular kinds of grave's discoveries, determination of chronology and interpretation of the causes of the followed phenomenon.
An early mediaeval cementery by Mlékojedy whittin his regional context
Derner, Kryštof ; Štefan, Ivo (advisor) ; Tomková, Kateřina (referee)
The basis of the presented thesis is a description of an early mediaeval burial ground in Mlékojedy "Nad hřbitovem", which was discovered in the year 2007. Based on the grave goods, it is dated back from the beginnig of the 10th to the half of the 11th century. The relation of the grave goods to anthropological attributes of burried individuals shows namely an increase in ratio of equipped graves up to an early adulthood and then its gradual reduction. The arrangement of a grave was dependent on dating. The grave with an elite female gariture and the grave with weapons are compared with the similar ones discovered in hinterland of the Litoměřice fortification. A regular positioning of burial grounds on the left bank of the river Labe as early as at the beginning of the 10th century shows an early settlement of this area and allows to dicover the extent of the Litoměřice agglomeration. The author of this thesis proposes, that a simultaneous abandoning of the both known burial grounds in the Mlekojedy estates is an evidence for a transfer of the burial grounds closer to a sanctuary located in the center of the contemporary village. Key words Burial ground, early mediaeval, Mlékojedy, Litoměřice distr., 10th. century, 11th. century, earrings, weapons, social topography, history of settlement,...
