Experiments with red and yellow dyes in chemistry education
Škutová, Vendula ; Petrželová, Simona (advisor) ; Stratilová Urválková, Eva (referee)
This work focuses on red and yellow dyes obtained from available foods and beverages. Food colouring enhances the attractiveness of products. The use of food dyes extracted from common foods, beverages and chemicals can enhance the attractiveness of lessons and emphasize the connection of chemistry to everyday life. A list of reactions of some red and yellow dyes was created and some school experiments, using these dyes, are included in this list. Some reactions of red and yellow dyes were experimentally verified in the laboratory and photographs of the colour changes were taken. Four teaching materials (worksheets) for grades 7 to 9 were created (Proč se barví potraviny?, Jak změřit pH bez pH papírků?, Syntetická a přírodní barviva, Einsteinova hádanka s barvivy) and their common topic is food colouring and dyes extracted from foods and drinks. These worksheets are used as tools for the pupils' work in the laboratory. There is also a methodological material for teachers which contains information about the materials needed to prepare, their relation to the curriculum documents of the Czech republic and the timing of the lesson. All four worksheets were tested in the classroom and improved based on pupils' feedback. Key words dyes in food, chemical experiment, didactic materials
Chemical experiments in high school education - design of experiments focusing on color chemistry
Škutová, Vendula ; Petrželová, Simona (advisor) ; Teplý, Pavel (referee)
Chemical experiments are an important part of high school chemistry education. The main advantage of chemical experiments is fact that pupils effectively connect their theoretical knowledge with what they can see. Furthermore, pupils' competencies improve. This bachelor thesis focuses on experiments with blue colored chemicals which can be easily obtained. Chemicals used in these experiments are common compounds found in school laboratories or easily obtainable food, beverages etc. The theoretical part of this bachelor thesis contains information about structure and chemical properties of the chemicals which make a basis for experiments mentioned in the practical part. Additionally, experiments described in the practical part, which were designed and performed, are based on most known experiments with the chemicals described in the theoretical part. Further description of these experiments and their photo documentation can be found in the practical part, too. Evaluation of these experiments involves their integration into thematically focused worksheet. Four thematically focused worksheets were created according to the national curriculum of the Czech Republic for grammar schools (RVP G) and to the school curriculum of Gymnázium Botičská (ŠVP).
