Pavel Bořkovec (1894 - 1972 ) was an outstanding Czech music composer and teacher. This bachelor work deals with a certain part of his work, five string quartets in particular. The first chapter introduces Bořkovec's family background, education base and also first steps of his professional composer career. He had gone through several influences, later he became a respected composer inspired by the best sources of a Czech Avant-garde movement of zhe thirties. This part is followed by a chapter analysing his five string quartets, written during the period of forty years.Since the First String Quartet was composed under the influence of Bořkovec's beloved teacher Josef Suk, the second one proves his own way.The third one remained in torso. The Fourth and the Fifth String Quartets demonstrate the mastery of Bořkovec's chamber work.
