Design of an effusion cell for the deposition of Sn and Zn ultrathin layers

This bachelor thesis deals with the design and the construction of effusion cells for the deposition of zinc and tin ultrathin layers. In the introductory part there is an explanation of principles of eusion cells' functions, like a molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) or a construction of the efussion ow. Furthermore, the work describes a general principles of a ccreation of the atom sources. Theoretical part ends with review about the growth of ultrathin layers and nanostructures of zinc, tin and their compounds. Experimental part provides a design of the effusion cells with radiation heating from silicon carbide and heating by electrons impact. The complete drawing documentation of the designed effusion cells is included in the attachment.
Epitaxial growth of cobalt islands via oxide mediated epitaxy

This bachelor thesis deals with preparation, growth and analysis of cobalt thin films. The films are formed on silicon (111) samples covered with a thin layer of native oxide SiO2. Cobalt thin films were prepared using oxide mediated epitaxy method with the effusion cell as a source of cobalt atoms. Composition and morphology of the resulting Co system was studied as a function of the annealing temperature. Another goal of this research was to determine the dependence of the final island shape on the amount of deposited material and substrate orientation. The prepared structures were analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. To determine the thickness of subsurface islands the samples were etched in buffered hydrofluoric acid and analyzed using above mentioned methods.
Preparation of surfaces with diffusion barrier for studying initial phase of semiconductor nanowire growth

This bachelor's thesis deals with preparation of surfaces with diffusion barriers for studying germanium nanowire growth. Semicondutor growth mechanism is explained as well as the role of diffusion barriers, such as graphene or aluminium oxide, during nanowire growth. Graphene was prepared using CVD method and aluminium oxide was prepared using ALD method. It is shown that nanowires could not grow on prepared samples with diffusion barriers on them.
Deposition of magnetic nanostructures using EBID and optimalization of their chemical composition and morphology

This master's thesis deals with deposition of cobalt nanostructures using Electron Beam Induced Depositon (EBID). The thesis firstly describes theoretical background regarding EBID. In the following experimental part, the deposition process is optimized via analysis of exposition parameters and their influence on the final shape of nanostructures. These are analyzed via Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Optimized exposure parameters are then applied to the deposition of functional 3-dimensional nanostrucutres. In particular, the deposition of cobalt spheres. The elemental composition is analyzed by the means of element composition using Energy-dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX) and the nanostructures of desired morphologies are studied with Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM) and Magneto-Optical Kerr Microscope).
Semiconductor nanowire growth utilizing alloyed catalyst

This master's thesis deals with growth of germanium nanowires using different catalyst particles. The emphasis is mainly layed on fabrication of specific alloyed catalyst consisting of (AgGa). In the first part of the thesis are mentioned two most common concepts of nanowire growth and the importance of phase diagrams for their interpretation. Method for production of alloyed catalyst is demonstrated and experiments focused on the growth of germanium nanowires using this catalyst were performed. Moreover, method for modification of germanium surface via anisotropic etching is demonstrated as well. Such etched structures are suitable for nanowire growth with the help of different kinds of catalyst particles or for the growth of nanowires made of various materials.
Low Energy Ions Scattering analysis of graphene layers prepared by CVD technology

This bachelor thesis is focused on the analysis of graphene samples by the Low Energy Ion Scattering (LEIS). The production of graphene layers is realized by the Chemical Vapor Deposition method (CVD) on the Institute of Physical Engineering. Analysis of the samples is taken place in the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC) by Qtac 100. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to optimize of technology in order to reduce contaminants in the graphene layer.
Application of high resolution transmission electron microscopy for structure analysis of nanowires

This diploma thesis deals with the structural analysis of semiconductor nanowires by transmission electron microscopy. The construction of microscope is introduced together with its basic imaging modes and with the function of each construction element in these modes. In the experimental part the results of analysis of several germnaium nanowires are discussed, with emphasis on their crystallographic structure and orientation.
Application of metal and semiconductor nanostructures for biodetection

The master’s thesis deals with two applications of gold discoidal nanostructures exhibiting plasmon resonance for biodetection. The first approach considers the detection of changes in the phase on plasmonic antennas using coherence-controlled holography microscope. It was found that the steepness of the phase is increasing with the illumination wavelength when plasmon resonance is excited in larger antennas. The sensitivity of the phase to refractive-index changes of the surrounding media was observed when the largest response was given by antennas in resonance with wavelength of illumination. Next part deals with plasmon resonance detection by means of optical spectroscopy combined with voltametry which characterizes the electrochemical activity. Changes in resonance wavelength induced by the presence of SSC buffer were observed, although this influence seems to diminish in time. Conducted experiments have also shown that oxygen-plasma cleaning is not suitable for sample surface cleaning because of oxidation of metals including gold as well.
Characterization of semiconducting nanowires

This diploma thesis is focused on characterization of semiconductive nanowires. Theoretical part of thesis deals with basic physical properties of TiO2 and a search of selected properties of titanium dioxide nanostructures is preseted. The experimental part describes several spectroscopic measurements carried out with complex of TiO2 nanowires. The influence of gold nanoparticles (deposited on the nanowire surface) on sample properties is also tested. The final part of thesis is devoted to methodology for measurement of electrical properties. These experiments are carried out only with one nanowire. Focused electron beam induced deposition (resp. Focused ion beam induced deposition) and electron lithography are utilized.
Testing and optimization of an ion source

A thorough description of the testing of a saddle-field ion source is presented in the diploma thesis. The most important experimental results, such as Faraday cup measurements of the ion beam current profile and of the ion energy spectra, are included. Based on these results it is shown that the optimized ion source works correctly and according to the expectations. At the end of the thesis, the development of the ion-optical and construction design of the focusing optics is described. The manufactured optics assembly attached to the ion source is also shown.
