Korea, Vatican and History of Korean Catholic Church
Chyňavová, Anna ; Löwensteinová, Miriam (advisor) ; Zemánek, Marek (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the history of Catholicism in Korea from its very beginning. It describes the background of its appearance there as well as the clash with Neo-Confucianism and following persecutions of the first believers. It defines a period before and during Japanese occupation when the Catholic Church was legal but also had to conform to demands of the government. The thesis then focuses on a period after the liberation of the nation, when the Church stopped being merely inward-looking and slowly became involved in the matters of the society. Following the Second Vatican Council it actively stood up for human rights and drew attention to dehumanizing trends of the regime's policies. The last part includes today's states of the Church, its relationship with Vatican, the tradition of Korean Martyrs and the goals of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea.

System of slavery in traditional Korea
Rybáriková, Martina ; Glomb, Vladimír (advisor) ; Löwensteinová, Miriam (referee)
The main aim of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive account of the development of the institution of slavery in Korea. Slavery was a part of Korean society from its earliest times, and the evidence of this can be found in the penal code of eight provisions enacted by the mythical emperor Kidža, where he for the first time mentioned slavery as a punishment for theft. From this time on it was ceaselessly present in Korean society until its abolition in 1894. The oldest form of slavery as a punishment was gradually supplemented with other ways of how a person could fall into slavery. Individual slavery gradually evolved into hereditary slavery. Despite the fact that slavery was ceaselessly present in Korean society, the character and even the existence of it are still called into question in academic discussions. In the introductory part of my thesis I focused on the very essence of slavery. Afterwards, I gave a brief overview of the characteristics of three typical slave societies i.e. ancient Greece, ancient Rome and the United States of America. Studying the important characteristics of slavery in other slave societies provided the base for a detailed analysis of the connections with the Korean type of slavery. Some of this information confirms the hypothesis that slavery in Korea was...

A Comparison of Japanese and Western Scholars' Approaches to Study of Korean Folk Religion in the First Half of the 20th Century
Bartošová, Lucie ; Zemánek, Marek (advisor) ; Löwensteinová, Miriam (referee)
Korean folk religion is often mentioned in the publications of western Christian missionaries, who have carried out their missionary work in Korea and it has also become a popular research topic of Japanese researchers during the time of Japanese annexation of Korea (1910-1945). This thesis compares the contents of chosen publications from the first half of 20th century of western and Japanese authors that deal with Korean shamanism in hope of confirming or refute the hypothesis that Korean negative view of the Japanese research is caused not by the factual mistakes in said publications, but rather is due to the rivalry between both nations. Unfortunately, while absolute confirmation or refutation of the hypothesis was not possible, we can see a tendency of Korean academia to excuse the mistakes in publications of western authors due to their lack of knowledge of the Korean culture and on the other hand dismiss the Japanese research because of the authors' connection to the colonial government.
