Prague's Archbishop Johann Friedrich von Waldstein and his controversy on the Turkish wars taxes (1682-1694)

The ann of this thesis of archbishop of Prague Johann Friedrich von Waldstein (1642 - 1694; archbishop 1675-1694) consists in description of conflicts with Czech land assembly and state apparatus in the years 1678, 1679, 1682-1686 and 1691-1694. The last and most important continued also after his death (3'^'* June 1694). That time Czech clergy sent two deputies (further archbishop Daniel Ignatius Mayer of Mayem and abbot of monastery in Plasy Andreas Troyer) to Vienna, to arrange adjustment of a dispount, which culminated on the beginning of the year 1694. Principal chapters of this thesis deal with conflicts in the years 1682-1686 and 1691- 1694 (chapters 4-7). These are based on detailed archive research, especially of sources of 1®' department of National Archives in Czech republic (Archives of archiepiscopate in Prague), Family archives of Waldstein, located in The Regional State Archives in Prague and Archivio Segreto Vaticano in Cittá del Vaticano. The knights of the cross with the red heart (Cyriaci) and their convent in the Old Town of Prague between 1628-1729

An extensive historical knowledge of the Cyriac church order is enabled due to a set of mostly Latin archival manuscript books (deposited mainly in the National Library in Prague), accomplished betw. 1740-1770 by the conventual historian, a luminary Joannes C. Rohn whose work methods and sources have been a subject of investigation. The further aim of this paper is to define the order`s involvement in the social and liturgical life in terms of Post-White- Mountain catholic superiority. Prague`s order possessions were restored from Cracovian centre after a long cessation in 1628, and later (till 1783) remained a single Cyriaci convent in Bohemia. These regular canons focused their public activity predominantly on a local spiritual service, carried out up from 1640 also in the adjacent Holy Spirit`s district, and later in a stretch of suburban village area. As well, variably, assisted in a parochial administration throughout the country. Within a few decades the clerics gained confidence of the local, hitherto confessionwise prevalently utraquist parishioners, and a close cooperation was established. Municipal administration and offices in the Middle Elbe region during the Thirty Years' War

The operation of municipal offices and municipal administration in general was not a too popular topic in Czech historiography. Even this aspect of the life of Czech towns was strongly influenced by the persecution of Czech estates after the battle on the White Mountain and following processes with the gravity centre in the third decade of the 17th century, as well as by the direct and indirect consequences of military actions. Research in such area can also enrich our knowledge of many aspects of contemporary city life and contribute to a better explanation of such consequential phenomena as emigration and recatholicization. The municipal councils and municipal offices can often be named as nervus rerum in these circumstances. To elaborate the problems of military influences on administration in the times of the Thirty Years' War fully is not possible without more detailed studies about the situation of particular municipal offices. This kind of research would enable us to compare several regions. But there is a lack of such studies. The way out can be found by using proper surveys of the situation of several towns. Correspondence of Charles Older of Zerotin/ with a wiew to Francophone Correspondents

Předkládaná práce je členěna do šesti základních kapitol, zpracovávajících korespondenci podle jednotlivých životních období, jimiž Karel starší ze Žerotína prošel, a na základě korespondentů, se kterými si Žerotín nejčastěji psal. Jako součást této práce je připojen obecný epistolografický rozbor a pohled na druhý život moravského aristokrata. Zvláštní kapitola se pak věnuje komparaci francouzštiny 16. a 17. století a dnešní podobou jazyka. Výklad zahrnuje zhodnocení korespondence v latině, češtině, francouzštině, němčině a italštině na pozadí politických a společenských událostí, a to v závislosti na skladbě, kvantitě, i struktuře zachovaných pramenů. Nedostatek pramenů k některým etapám Karlova života nelze dávat za vinu pouze jejich zničení, a to jak současnému, způsobeného událostmi třicetileté války, tak i v dobách pozdějších. Absence pramenů k dané problematice v konkrétních případech je také zapříčiněna chybějící nově zpracovanou monografií a edicí specializující se na cizojazyčnou korespondenci.

Correspondence of Charles Older of Zerotin with a Wiew to Francophone correspondents

Charles l'Ancien de Žerotín, né en 1564, il fut un des seigneurs les plus remarquables de l'époque. Il fit ses études Strasbourg, Bâle et Genve. Il parcourut l'Italie et la France, visita l'angleterre et les Pays-Bas. Un des seigneurs moraves les plus puissants, il devint gouverneur de Moravie en 1608. Il fut protecteur de l'union des Frres en Moravie et promoteur actif des séjours d'études de la jeunesse morave aux écoles protestantes étrangres. Personnage d'un vaste horizon politique, ayant de trs nombreuses relations dans les milieux dirigeants européens. Lors de la révolte, il refusa d'employer les armes contre le souverain et s'efforça d'apaiser le conflit avec les Habsbourgs par des négociations et par des compromis. Cependant, ses efforts échourent. En tant que Frre morave, il fut obligé de quitter le pays en 1628; il se retira Breslau, il mourut en 1636. Malgré ses attitudes et ses fautes il reste l'homme honnte et de la "foi pure" . Grâce lui et sa trs nombreuse correspondance on peut se faire une idée de la société de la Renaissance et du dessous politique de la situation en Europe surtout au 17® sicle. Ses lettres nous revlent la vie quotidienne de la noblesse du 16® et du 17® sicle. La vie de Charles L'Ancien de Žerotín on la trouve comme le chemin de don Quijote dans le labyrinthe du monde.

Téma mé diplomové práce Mor v Rakovníku roku 1680, jsem částečně zpracovával již v rámci seminářů Doc. PhDr. Ivany Čornejovové, CSc. a PhDr. Bohdana Zilynského, jejichž obsahem byly katastrofy v raném novověku a Rakovnický region. Tyto seminární práce posloužily jako základní studie pro mou diplomovou práci. Z jejich textu jsem samozřejmě čerpal, nebylo však možné je použit v nezměněné podobě. Arithmetic class - a basic pillar of Piarist education in Czech Lands

Aritmetickou třídu piaristických škol, rozšířenou po všech řádových provinciích, které postupně během vývoje piaristického řádu do osvícenských školních reforem a úprav vznikaly, se dosud žádná podrobnější studie nezabývala. Působnost této třídy bývala v dějinách piaristického různě vykládána a interpretována. Také se zařazením do tehdejšího školního sytému činilo mnohým autorům určité potíže. Většina ji pokládala za doplněk základní školy, za jakousi nouzovou třídu, jenž umožňovala těm žákům, kteří z nejrůznějších důvodů nemohli studovat u piaristů dále na gymnáziu snadnější vstup do praxe, nebo za ústupek šlechtickým, později pak mnohem více také měšťanským, zakladatelům řádových kolejí, v t om smyslu, že se vyhoví jejich požadavkům vyučit jejich synky v kupeckých počtech. Pokud si autoři všimli, že výuka v aritmetických třídách převyšovala svým zaměřením a požadavky kladené na běžnou třídu základní školy, často j im dělalo potíže zařazení této třídy zaměřené na reálnou výuku do tehdejšího školního systému. Váhalo se v otázce, zda aritmetická třída, zejména její vyšší oddělení, byla reálnou třídou, která mohla připravovat absolventy pro další studium a specializovaná zaměstnání technického zaměření, nebo odkladištěm pro nenadané studenty, které bylo třeba, obzvláště v době nátlaku v tomto směru před...

Picture of Life on Charles Bridge in the 16th and 17th Centuries

Nyní je na místě pohovořit o důvodech, které mě vedly k volbě období raného novověku respektive 16. a 17. století. Důvody se vlastně nabízejí samy. Most byl založen v polovině 14. století a tudíž starší období nepřichází v úvahu. 15. století není v pramenech, které jsem měl k dispozici, zastoupeno v dostatečném rozsahu. K období zhruba mezi lety 1500 a 1700 naopak existuje ideální množství dokumentů, pro potřeby této práce, které se dá prostudovat.
