Rilke's Novel Die Aufzeichungen des Malte Laurids Brigge in Czech Translations
Dubcová, Eliška ; Tvrdík, Milan (advisor) ; Svoboda, Tomáš (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with two translations of Rilke's novel Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge. Each translation is not only conceived as a final product, but also as a communication process, influenced by a number of cultural and socio-political factors. The thesis therefore attempts to capture changes in Rilke's reception in relation to the literary paradigm and - with regards to the political situation - to the contemporary publisher policy, because during the period of socialism Rilke's work, which was highly valued in the thirties, came back into general awareness quite slowly in connection with the gradual liberation of cultural and political situation. The goal of the thesis is to map the problems of the translations' genesis with regards to the period and cultural environment and to the translators' poetic style. Part of the thesis addresses a translatological analysis, which is the base for defining both of the translators' methods.

Furthermore there will also be introduced the Modernism in painting, architecture and music by their major artists. Similarly, in literature will be presented Hermann Bahr as an organizer of the literary group Young Vienna and his biggest opponent Karl Kraus, the satirist of his time. Thematically, the work of the authors of Young Vienna is divided into three areas, namely into the image of the society, which is mainly reflected in the work of Arthur Schnitzler and Peter Altenberg, aestheticism, which is also the subject of the most important works by Leopold Andrian, Richard Beer-Hofmann and the early dramas of Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Philosophical and aphoristic short prose of Botho Strauß
Číhalová, Jitka ; Stromšík, Jiří (advisor) ; Tvrdík, Milan (referee)
The famous contemporary German playwright Botho Strauß is also a prominent author of philosophical and aphoristic short prose, among others a volume named Paare, Passanten (Pairs, Passers by), which has been examined from the standpoints of formal, topical and ideological particularities. From the formal standpoint, the book is distinguished by occurrence of mixed literary forms dominated by short reflective, philosophical and personal notes, narrations and "portraits of moments", which bear both aphoristic and essayistic styles. The transitions between individual literary forms are often unclear and inconspicuous, even within an individual text. The texts are loosely connected to each other, yet they form a sophisticatedly composed series. The style of Strauß's texts is heavily enigmatic, fantastic and often allegorical. The texts are distinguished by a multilayered, at least dual structure (compare Welsch 26), which is typical for post-modernistic literature and offers to the reader a great variability in interpreting the allegorically encoded abstract phenomena, while the actual contents of these texts mainly depends on the contents of reader's mind. The central topic of the volume is the necessity, perceived by the author, to convey a historical continuity, which is to form a basis for creating a new...
Utopia in the Works of Adalbert Stifter
Smetana, Jiří ; Tvrdík, Milan (advisor) ; Weinberg, Manfred (referee)
Name of the author: Jiří Smetana Name of the MA thesis: Utopia in the Works of Adalbert Stifter University: Charles University in Prague Faculty: Faculty of Arts Department: Institute of the Germanic Studies Supervisor: Doc. PhDr. Milan Tvrdík, CSc. Place and date of publishing: Prague, March 2011 The subject of the present work is Adalbert Stifter's utopia. The aim is to outline its main essence and in part describe the motives that had led Stifter to his utopia. The work describes the artistic, political and social background of the Biedermeier era and approximates Stifter as its principal representative in Austrian literature. Adalbert Stifter's talent was versatile; he had affection for nature and art. Art was one of his most faithful friends. Stifter's Biedermeier literary works are original and in a certain sense possess great depth. For every opinion in these works is put down rationally. In this regard we would be hard pressed to find selfcontent in Stifter's late work. This opinion is also shared by the Austrian writer Peter Rosegger, who regards Adalbert Stifter higher than Johann Wolfgang Goethe for this very reason. As Rosegger rightly states, Stifter's style is also very original.1 This work takes note of the utopian features in some of Stifter's short stories and in his educational...
The Search for a Feminine I. New German feminine literature from the seventies to the nineties
Vydrželová, Pavlína ; Tvrdík, Milan (advisor) ; Weinberg, Manfred (referee)
XII. Summary The present work is concerned with the book "shedding'' by verena stefan which gave rise to fiery discussions by critics as wel] as by readers. "[ am my other selť'164 should become the result of the search ťor a feminine I. The leitmotif of the whole book is the self-acceptance of the protagonist which had to be gained step by step, by eliminating the feeling about her own estranged body. At the end of the book the question remains whether this will be converted into a permanent victory. I tried to find out various aspects in Verena Stefan's first book. The focus lay in the analysis of possible acces§es to the new feminine identity. In the first part I concentrated on the formal and contextual aspects, in order to find out and define the characteristics of the new ťeminine literature. stefan's "shedding" launched many other publications which form part of the new German Femininist Literature. "shedding'o by verena stefan made the influence of the women's Movement visibie for the first time. Although "Shedding" is considered a landmark in the history of the new femininist literature, its influence was limited to only one curťent and not to all publications in this íield printed in the following period, as was erroneously said in other scientific documents on literature. A further role played by...
Mephisto: Novel of a Career. The Moralic Responsibility of an Artist. A Comparison between Klaus Mann and Gustaf Gründgens.
Wunderlin, Katja ; Weinberg, Manfred (advisor) ; Tvrdík, Milan (referee)
The work deals with the ambivalent relationship between Klaus Mann and Gustaf Gründgens. Former political and artistic colleagues and friends chose opposite paths during the time of National Socialism. The prior thrust in their relationship allowed Klaus Mann to process the person of Gustaf Gründgens in the time-critical novel Mephisto. On the one hand, Klaus Mann describes the path of a cultivated supporter of the regime, the talented opportunist and characterless careerist while the novel is also Klaus Mann's dealing with his past friend. The aim of my work is to compare the moral positions and development of the two artists during the Nazi-regime. The basis for this comparison is the novel Mephisto. Keywords: Klaus Mann, Gustaf Gründgens, Career, Comparison, Moral Responsibility, Artist, National Socialism, Ambivalent Relationship of Klaus Mann and Gustaf Gründgens
