Regulation of Hedge Funds and Private Equity in the Light of the Global Financial Crisis
Šinka, Michal ; Teplý, Petr (advisor) ; Buzková, Petra (referee)
The aim of the thesis is to analyse the non-bank regulatory framework with particular attention devoted to hedge funds and private equity funds. The thesis describes functioning of the funds, discusses their performance during the global financial crisis of 2007-present and, predominantly, describes and analyses the EU and U.S. regulatory reforms with respect to these institutions which have arisen as a response to the crisis. Based on the analysis of the measures incorporated in these reforms, the thesis outlines its own proposal of an alternative investment fund regulatory framework which, if applied, would lead to a more efficient functioning of the alternative investment industry than what is likely to be the outcome of the already adopted reforms. The nature of the thesis is institutional; its methodology is characterized by a broad literature survey. Hedge funds and private equity funds are considered both in pre-crisis context as well as in circumstances that have been brought about by the crisis. Several hypotheses concerning systemic risk and the approach of the regulatory reforms to it are assessed. Mostly qualitative analysis is employed to evaluate the hypotheses.
Deposit Insurance in the European Union
Holá, Veronika ; Jakubík, Petr (advisor) ; Teplý, Petr (referee)
This thesis examines the question whether uncoordinated steps of some EU states changing their deposit insurance schemes in the middle of 2008 could have led to shifts of deposits among EU countries. The paper deals mainly with changes of the rules which were introduced at the end of year 2008, and concerns with the amended Directive on Deposit Guarantee Schemes. Empirical analysis concentrates on the impact of state guarantees on the deposit grow rate in individual states. In the final part, we discuss the consequences of recent development and possible future progress.
Basel III: Evaluation and Impact in the Czech Republic
Gleta, Jakub ; Teplý, Petr (advisor) ; Geršl, Adam (referee)
The thesis is focused on content and impact of the new Basel Capital Accord, commonly known as Basel III. These rules react to recent development in global financial markets and introduce some substantial changes into regulatory approach, which include changes to the definition and required amount of regulatory capital and presents new liquidity requirements. The thesis then assesses new rules form two points of view. First, a quantitative model is constructed that predicts the impact of new rules on capital adequacy of four major Czech banks based on default rates data. In the second part of the analysis, institutional impact of new regulation is stressed, namely the question of how new rules fit within the theoretical framework of optimal regulatory architecture and what pitfalls they have. The thesis is unique in the eclectic nature of its approach, whereby two seemingly disparate approaches oppose each other and an attempt at synthesis is presented. How Bank Competition Influences Financial Stability
Vildová, Romana ; Horváth, Roman (advisor) ; Teplý, Petr (referee)
How Bank Competition Influences Financial Stability Abstract This paper investigates the link between financial stability and bank competition by means of the Arellano & Bond (1991) GMM model using annual panel data over the period 2000 - 2014 for 205 countries. Our data source is a new, richer and updated dataset The Global Financial Development Database available at World Bank. Due to the specifics of this dataset we are able to use new combinations of measures of financial stability and of bank competition and to study their relationship in greater depth. We find a positive link between financial stability and bank competition. Furthermore, our results provide evidence that it matters what measures of financial stability and bank competition we apply. Lastly, we ascertain that the relationship between financial stability and bank competition does not change over time. Bank Efficiency, Risk, and Capital in the Visegrad Group Countries
Fraňo, Filip ; Teplý, Petr (advisor) ; Lešanovská, Jitka (referee)
The aim of the thesis is to estimate the cost efficiency of the banks from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia during 2008-2013 using stochastic frontier analysis. In addition to this, mutual relationships between the changes in banks' cost efficiency, risk- taking, and capital position are examined. First, the literature that is concerned with these relationships is reviewed and the stochastic frontier approach towards the efficiency estimation is outlined. In the empirical analysis, the cost efficiency of the banks from the aforementioned countries is estimated. The results suggest that the Czech and the Polish banks from the sample have the highest average cost efficiency while the Hungarian banks rank the lowest. The estimated efficiency is decreasing during the sample period. No conclusive results are found to support the hypothesis that the larger banks exhibit higher cost efficiency. Subsequently, the system of simultaneous equations is applied to test the mutual relationships between the changes in the banks' cost efficiency, risk-taking, and capital position. The results suggest a negative relationship between the changes in risk-taking and cost efficiency and between the changes in capital position and risk-taking of the banks. Moreover, the results do not indicate simultaneous...
Application of Premiums and Discounts to the Company Valuation
Sokol, Jakub ; Dědek, Oldřich (advisor) ; Teplý, Petr (referee)
In the light of the current market downturn, the need of the most accurate valuation appears to be more crucial than ever before. This thesis provides the reader with both the theoretical and practical background of the use of valuation premiums and discounts which apply directly to the value of the company reached by conventional separate valuation techniques. The most important premiums and discounts we focus our attention on are control premium/minority interest discount and lack of liquidity discount. The thesis presents an overview of the basic methodology of the theoretical concepts related to the valuation premiums and discounts. Moreover, based on a sample of 202 mergers and acquisitions transactions of the companies listed in the Central and Eastern Europe ("CEE"), we examine the size and key determinants of the control premium applicable within the CEE region.
